There are many songs that I heard in my younger days and loved them, even though I had no inkling which movie these songs were from. I have been rediscovering many of these songs again.

“Talaash” (1969) had awesome music and a nice story line. In another time and era, this movie would have gone on to become a musical blockbuster. But unfortunately this movie had to compete with “Aradhana” and it was a knock out contest. “Talaash” was knocked out and “Aradhana” won.

“Jewel Thief”, like most Dev Anand movies with S D Burman’s music, had some very nice songs in it. I have already posted a few songs from this movie.

Here is a superb “party song” from “Anita” (1966). I wonder if this should be called a cabaret song as well. It seems that the dance was supposed to be cabaret but the costumes of the dancers is very much that of classical dancers.

Lata Mangeshkar was very fond of a folk song that belonged to the village of her grandmother. In 1950s, she asked C Ramchandra to create a song based on this folk song and C Ramchandra created a superb dance song in “Aasha” (1957) that was picturised on Vyjyanti Mala. This song, which was written by Rajinder Krishan was “tu na aaya aur hone lagi shaam re”.

Music director Ravi is one person who entered Bollywood music scene in 1940s ( as an assistant music director) and he was around for the entire period that is regarded as the golden era of Bollywood music. He in fact can be described as one of the very few such persons who was there when the golden era began and he was still around when that era was over. All this while, he held his own . He was never jobless and he continued to churn out hit songs without fail.

In “Des Pardes”, Pran goes to England as an immigrant and back home his wife Indrani Mukherji and Younger brother Dev Anand wait for any information from him. Dev Anand sings this song for Indrani Mukherji, informing her that Pran has sent a gift (Nazraana) from England.

In India, where boys and girls are not allowed to mingle freely like in the west, most wedding alliances are fixed by the parents, again without taking the kids themselves into confidence. And after the parents finalise it, they inform the parties. One important information, and perhaps the only important information that a person often has is a photograph- a passport size photograph.

“Naunihaal” (1967) was a movie that did not do well at the box office. This movie had a few nice songs in it, though. After all, it has Madan Mohan as the music director.
