Great songs are not always the preserve of hit movies. I have realised that many great songs were composed for movies that flopped at the box office. The movies were forgotten , but the songs were not.
Then there are cases when the movies failed so badly that they took the songs down with them. Most listeners never, or rarely got an opportunity to listen to these songs and as a result such songs met with untimely demises.
Here is a song from an obscure movie called “Do Boond Paani” (1971). It had Agha and Simi Garewal in lead roles, with Kiran Kumar making his debut as a hero and it was a low budget movie on a real life problem (scarcity of drinking water in Rajasthan). So naturally the movie became as scarce as drinking water in Rajasthan.
I recall having heard this song once or twice, but without any idea which movie this song was from.
Now some three decades or so later, I was asked by Bawa as to what happened to her farmmaishes for the songs of “Do Boond Paani”. I searched, and I was so pleasantly surprised to be able to find this song. And the pleasure was enhanced on finding what song it was.
The song is a wonderful creation of Jaidev, who is regarded by Anil Biswas as one of the outstanding musical talents of our time (the other being Sajjad Hussain). And unfortunately most of Jaidev’s creations came in forgotten movies.
This song is written by Kaifi Azmi and it is sung by Minu Purushottam and Parveen Sultana. This folk based song is so easy on the ears that one can keep listening to this song many times without feeling bored.

Also wanted to add that it is so refreshing to hear voices of someone different to usual in this song.
Both of them have beautiful and unique voices.

According to MySwar.co, there are two versions of this song: Happy and Sad. The Happy version was sung by Parveen Sultana & Meenu Purushottam. The sad song was by Parveen Sultana.

Beautiful song and article. Thanks so much. If possible, please correct the lyrics of the video version at one place – it should be: जल-जल के बैरी धूप में, सवलां..या रंग दुहाई रे (not – jal jal ke bairi dhoop mein, kam na aaya rang duhaayi re). Thanks again!

This movie flopped but was a favourite of Doordarshan at one point: I have watched it at least 3 or 4 times on DD. I think it used to be broadcast on Independence or other such patriotic days.
The movie is really well made with a realistic story (which explains perhaps the box-office reaction), except for the ending, which you may or not may not find credible. I could only remember the other song I had put in the “farmaish” for, but of course now I remember this…it is brilliant.
And seeing that it was Jaidev’s anniversary a few days a go, it is great homage to this brilliant director.
I am awaiting when you are able to locate the other number, “Ja ja ri pawaniya piya ke des ja,” sung by Asha Bhonsle I think.

I have been able to locate the audio of “jaa ri pawaniya” too. I spent much of my day today trying to figure out how to download that audio. I will post this song soon.
