“Sahaara” (1958) was one of the first (if not the first) movie where Meena Kumari took her first steps toward tragedy roles. In this movie, she plays a blind woman, though her character appears quite positive in this movie, based on the picturisation of songs on her in this movie.

I have mentioned it many times that Chitragupta, despite his outstanding musical talent would not go out and socialise with big wigs of the industry and that is what prevented him from landing big banner movies. For instance, the first time he was introduced to raj Kapoor was in late 1980s by his sons Anand and Milind, and on meeting him, Raj Kapoor said that he was a big fan of Chitragupta and he would have loved to work with Chitragupta had he met him in their heydays.

I have mentioned that Ganesh is one music director who unfortunately did not get the credit that he so richly deserved. His songs are so difficult to come by and even in these songs we often find his name missing. Even the uploaders of his songs are often unaware about Ganesh.

There are few actors in Hindi cinema of yesteryear who evoke as much passion in film-lovers as Shammi Kapoor. He came into cinema at a time when pathos ruled and emotional tragedies, a la Devdas, were the order of the day. Although he made an effort to fit in, he was thankfully (for all of us) a miserable failure in his efforts.

Shikari (1963) was a B-movie, starring Ajit and Ragini. I had the pleasure of watching it a few months ago and I must say I thoroughly enjoyed it. It is a typical jungle adventure story with the necessary ingredients of tigers, gorillas and such. This may not be to everybody’s taste but I do enjoy such movies, even at this age. 😉

The initial movies of Raj Kapoor were made with Raj Kapoor as hero and Nargis/Vyjyanti Mala/Padmini etc as leading lady. And in these movies Shankar Jaikishan would compose the music. This combination was repeated till “Mera Naam Joker” (1970). This movie flopped big time and Raj Kapoor found himself on the verge of bankruptcy.

In the picturisation of this song, Dharmendra has just realised that Hema Malini is in love with him. Having made this discovery, Dharmendra jumps up and down all over the place, singing this joyous song, and Hema Malini is naturally embarrased at this public display of Dharmendra’s love for her.
