Meri jaan tum pe sadke

Posted on: February 14, 2011

“Saawan Ki Ghataa” (1966) is one of the lesser known movies as far as I am concerned. This movie had Manoj Kumar and Sharmila Tagore in lead roles.

Here is a song from this movie. This song in fact has two versions, viz male version (sung by Mahendra Kapoor) and female version (sung by Asha Bhonsle). S H Bihari is the lyricist and music is composed by O P Nayyar. The song is picturised on Manoj Kumar and Sharmila Tagore,as applicable.

The effort that Mahendra Kapoor put in his singing is apparent in this song. In contrast , Asha Bhonsle ,on the other hand makes short work of her version of the song, by singing it seemingly effortlessly. Indeed that is what separates top singers from others. O P Nayyar used Mahendra Kapoor as a substitute for Rafi, his preferred male singer here since Rafi was not available to sing for him those days (thanks to a difference in opinion between the two).

So here is this nice song, in both the versions, from “Saawan Ki Ghataa” (1966).

Song-Meri jaan tumpe sadke (Saawan Ki Ghata) (1966) Singer-Mahendra Kapoor/Asha Bhonsle, Lyrics-S H Bihari,MD-O P Nayyar

Lyrics

—————————————-
Mahendra Kapoor version
———————————-

meri jaan tum pe sadke,
ehsaan itnaa kar do
meri zindagi mein apni,
chaahat ka rang bhar do
meri jaan tum pe sadke,
ehsaan itnaa kar do

kisi chaad ki zaroorat
nahin meri zindagi ko
ki taras rahaa hoon kab se
main tumhaari roshni ko
mujhe roshni dikhaa ke
ehsaan itna kar do,
meri zindagi mein apni,
chaahat ka rang bhar do
meri jaan tum pe sadke,
ehsaan itnaa kar do

ye tumhaari zulf jisko
mili shokhiyaan ghataa ki
inhin baadalon ke neeche
meri har nazar hai pyaasi
meri pyaas tum bujhaa ke
ehsaan itnaa kar do,
meri zindagi mein apni,
chaahat ka rang bhar do
meri jaan tum pe sadke,
ehsaan itnaa kar do

——————————————–
Asha Bhonsle version
——————————–

meri jaan tum pe sadke,
ehsaan itnaa kar do
meri jaan tum pe sadke,
ehsaan itnaa kar do
meri zindagi mein apni,
chaahat kaa rang bhar do
meri jaan tum pe sadke
ehsaan itna kar do

meri har khushi adhoori
meraa har singaar pheekaa
binaa pyaar ke na bhaaye
mujhe chaand kaa bhi teekaa
mujhe pyaar se sajaa ke
ehsaan itnaa kar do,
meri zindagi mein apni,
chaahat kaa rang bhar do
meri jaan tum pe sadke
ehsaan itna kar do

main hawaa kaa rukh badal doon
mile pyaar gar tumhaaraa
jahaan doob kar main dekhoon
ho usi jagah kinaaraa
mujhe tum gale lagaake
ehsaan itnaa kar do,
meri zindagi mein apni,
chaahat kaa rang bhar do
meri jaan tum pe sadke
ehsaan itna kar do

The second word ‘movie’ in the second para above should be ‘song’. Obviously it is a typographical error.

If I’m not mistaken, Sawan Ki Ghata did quite well. And the songs were big hits. I saw it long back and don’t remember much of it now but there is a famous Rafi song in this movie – “zulfon ko hata” where Manoj is eve-teasing Sharmila. He is very irritating (much like he is in “matlab nikal gaya hai to” in Amanat with Sadhana. Am surprised Sharmila does not slap him. 🙂 You should post that song too – it is a lovely Rafi song. Not his fault if it is picturised on Manoj. 🙂

@ Raja: Lol, we can understand how anyone wooing a pretty girl like Sharmila runs the risk of ending up as public enemy number 1 in the eyes of male populace.

Manoj – perhaps more so than the others.

I am not sure I agree with your opinion about the relative quality of Mahendra Kapur and Asha Bhosle’s versions. I always associated this song with Mahendra Kapur. I do not know if it is my bias about male version of twin songs in general. I have written an article on twin songs (or ‘tandem’ songs in Raju Bharatan’s terminology) on my blog http://www.songsofyore.com/twin-songs “Twin songs: A front-runner and a laggard” in which I have listed a large number of such songs in which male version is far more popular and well known to the extent that in many cases people are not even aware that the female versions existed.
