When I was young, listening to songs on radio (and specially on Radio Ceylon) was a much looked forward to activity by younsters and grown ups alike. Like always, parents frowned on this activity, because in their opinion, kids should concentrate on their studies, instead of such morally corrupt activities like watching movies and listening to their music. 🙂

Most music lovers of Hindi movie music are familiar with the names of major artists who began their careers in 1940s and later. But the artists who worked in the earlier decades are not all that well known, and worse, it is often believed that they were not in the same league as the artists who came later. Nothing could be farther from the truth, as I have been discovering.

“Bahaarein Phir Bhi Aayengi” (1966) is a movie that had Mala Sinha, Dharmendra and Tanuja in lead roles. As far as I am concerned, I know this song only for its title song (Badal jaaye agar maali…bahaarein phir bhi aayengi (Bahaarein Phir Bhi Aayengi ) ) which is so inspirational to listen to.

I thought that I had already discussed this song from “Shamaa” (1961) but it turns out that I was wrong. I was confusing this song with another song from this movie.

The movie Kaagaz Ke Phool (1959) is one of the classic movies of the great producer director Guru Dutt. This is a remarkable watershed movie, about the business of making movies. Guru Dutt plays the role of a director in the film world. The storyline is a very poignant and touching portrayal of his life as he passes through the phases of success and failure, both in the personal and professional domains. In many ways, this movie is an autobiographical essay by Guru Dutt about his own life and its tribulations, down to his supposed attraction for Waheeda Rehman, and how it disturbed his personal family life with Geeta Dutt.

“Zameendaar” (1942) is a movie that was produced far far back in time. One can notice that this movie was produced in the year when Indians passed the Quit India resolution against their British rulers. Yes, this movie goes that far back in Indian history.

“Kaneez” (1949) is a movie that had actors like Munawwar Sultana, Kuldip Kaur, Khwaja Sabir, Shyam, Sinha etc in it. Most actors of this movie hardly ring any bells for me. The songs of this movie are also not all that well known nowadays, but the songs are lovely to listen to. This movie has songs by singers other than the usual names and that makes for a refreshing change.

I have discussed one song from “Mirza Sahiban”(1947) in the past. considering that this is one of the four major tradional Punjabi tragic love stories, one would normally expect to have love songs (tragic or otherwise) in a movie like this. So I am pleasantly suprised to find that this movie has a light hearted song as well.
