Rut phire par din hamaare phire na
Posted on: January 13, 2012
Like most music lovers, I too mostly know only about the better known songs of movies and I am blissfully unaware of the lesser known songs from these movies.
I have found that many of these lesser known songs are absolute gems and in some cases they could well be the best song from the movie in my subjective judgement.
I have discussed as many as seven songs from “Pyaasa” (1957) and that includes almost all of the well known songs from the movie that have gone on to become iconic songs.
Here is a “lesser” known song from “Pyaasa” (1957). I believe that I have never heard this song before. And that may be the case with several other music lovers too. But what a wonderful song it is !
PS-I am not the only one who was unaware of this song. Mr Arunkumar Deshmuksh informs us that this song was excluded from the movie and as such this song is not known to too many people.
This song is sung by Geeta Dutt and it is picturised on Waheeda Rehman. Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist. S D Burman composed the lovely music of this song.
Lyrics of this song were sent to me by nahm.

rut phire par din hamaare
rut phire par din hamaare
phire naa phire naa phire naa
rut phirey par din hamaare
dharti pe rang chhaaya
duniya ke bhaag jaagey
lekin wahi andheraa
ab tak hai apne aagey
dharti pe rang chhaaya
duniya ke bhaag jaagey
lekin wahi andheraa
ab tak hai apne aagey
rut phirey par din hamaarey
phirey naa phirey naa phirey naa
rut phirey par din hamaare
pahunchi na apni naiyya
ab tak kisi kinaare
pahunchi na apni naiyya
ab tak kisi kinaare
koyi nahin jo ham ko
apni taraf pukaare
is paar kuchh nahin hai
uss paar kuchh nahin hai
apne liye siwaaye
majhdhaar kuchh nahin hai
is paar kuchh nahin hai
uss paar kuchh nahin hai
apne liye siwaaye
majhdhaar kuchh nahin hai
rut phirey par din hamaarey
phirey naa phirey naa phirey naa
rut phirey par din hamaare
phirey naa phirey naa phirey naa
rut phirey par din hamaarey
phire naa phire naa phire naa
rut phire par din hamaare

This song is not in the film’s DVDI have. I heard this song for the first time here.
Beautiful rendition by Geeta Dutt expressing pain and sorrow embedded in Sahir’s poetry.

Atul ji,
This song was removed from the film before its release and hence it is not known to anybody.

Arun ji,
In the trial show of the film in which Guru Dutt used to invite all cast and crew of the film to watch the film and offer their honest views. When Waheeda Rehman’s turn came for giving her views, she felt that this song though very melodious, seems to drag the film’s smooth flow of story line, So even if the song is removed from the film, it would not affect the story line. Mala Sinha who was present in the trial show told Waheeda not to suggest deletion of her own song as the actresses do not get sufficient exposure in films.
Guru Dutt released the film with this song. However, when he attended one of the shows during the second week, he found that many in the theatre started walking out of the theatre for quick smoke when this song started. So he decided to delete the song from the film sometime during the second week of its run, [Source: Waheeda Rehman’s interview on S D Burman,, the video clip of which is available on YT].
At page No. 116 of the book ‘S D Burman – The Prince Musician’ by Anirudha Bhattacharjee & Balaji Vittal (2018), it has been mentioned that the song was picturised on Waheeda Rehman in a rowing boat in a lake.
The third antara of the song would also indicate that it is a boat song.
