“Mera Naam Joker” (1970) was an ambitious movie of Raj Kapoor which unfortunately failed big time at the box office when it was released. The box office debacle was so big that it took Raj Kapoor quite some time to recover from it, and when he recovered, he had made a clean break from the past, in the sense that his musical team was totally revamped.

“Agra Road” (1957) is not a movie too many people remember today. This was a B grade movie which was a Nagina Films Presentation. It was directed by Ravindra Dave. the movie had Vijay Anand, Shakila, Nanda, Satish Vyas, Krishnakant, Dhumal, Bhagwan, Amarnath, Nazi etc in it.

Talat Mehmood had sung most of his duet songs mainly with Suraiyya, Geeta Dutt, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle and Sudha Malhotra. I get a feel of an affinity between the singers on the one hand and the actors on the screen on the other hand when I listen to Talat Mehmood-Geeta Dutt duets. This combination is pleasing to my ears and gives credence to what is intended in the lyrics. The song which comes to my mind in this context is ‘armaan bhare dil ki lagan tere liye hai’ from JAAN PEHCHAAN (1950).

Many of the songs that we discuss in this blog are those that we have heard in the past and we want to relive them and enjoy them again. There there is another kind of music, one that we may never have heard before for the simple reason that these songs did not become popular enough to get played on radio. The last few days have seen not one but two artists of the golden era departing from our midst. Music director Ravi left us one day before Holi and Joy Mujherji one day after holi. We, who in this blog discuss the songs of the golden era on a daily basis, are so familiar with the artists involved in these songs that they feel like close acquaintances.
