Guru Dutt and Dev Anand were good friends. Guru Dutt was senior to Dev Anand,having started in 1941 with Uday Shankar’s Cultural centre-Almoda to study Dance and drama. In 1944 Guru Dutt joined Prabhat Film company at Poona, where he met his two future friends- Rehman and Dev Anand. In 1946, he worked there as an assistant Director to P.L.Santoshi for “Hum Ek Hai” and also choreographed its dances. It was here that he developed a bond with Dev.

In the early era of Talkie films the Film Companies which were well known were Imperial, New Theatres, British Dominion, Kohinoor, Krishna, Maharashtra, Ranjit, Saraswati, Sharada film company etc. Most of these companies continued from the silent era. Slowly many film companies stopped or got merged with existing companies. But one name stood out even in those days and that was PRABHAT FILM COMPANY or PFC.

A few days back on the occasion of Amitabh and Rekha’s birthday I spoke of how famous or popular or well received their pairing was in Bollywood movies. There were other such equally popular jodis. Viz. Rishi Kapoor- Neetu Singh, Vinod Mehra- Moushmi Chaterjee, Rajesh Khanna with Sharmila Tagore, Rajesh Khanna with Mumtaz, Rajesh Khanna with Asha Parekh etc in my growing up years. Actually I thought that Jaya Bhaduri never made a geat pair on screen with Amitabh, I liked her more with Sanjeev Kumar or even Jeetendra. There were popular pairing in the previous generation of stars too. But I think we have more knowledgeable people in our group to list them. Now what made a pairing popular was how well they looked together or how had their movie fared at the box office or how much recall value their songs had.

“Chaudhvin Ka Chaand” (1960) was a Guru Dutt Films production. It was directed by M Sadiq. The movie had Rehman, Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rehman, Minoo Mumtaz, Mumtaz Begum, Pravin Paul, Naazi, Zebunissa, Uma Devi, Lata Sinha, Balam, Johnny Walker etc in it.

When I was a pre teen and even teenager, I did not like old songs at all. In fact, I and my peers found old songs as sources of inadvertent amusement when we were tired of disliking them. We wondered all the time why old singers could not sing like the present day singers.
