Sometimes some producers get so obsessed with a story that they devote a good portion of their career to make a movie on that story. For instance, K Asif had planned “Mughal e Azam” as early as 1940s itself and it took him nearly two decades of time and enormous resources to finally bring his dream project to fruition in 1960 with different lead actors than what was originally planned. Likewise, Kamal Amrohi’s “Pakeezaa” was in the making for a decade or more before it finally got completed and released in 1972. By that time the lead actress and the music director of the movie were no longer around.

In the early era there was a fair exchange of film themes and music between all the centres of film production like Bombay, Lahore, Calcutta, Madras, Poona and Kolhapur( and Hyderabad and Bangalore at a later time). That is why sometimes Bilingual films were made. Madras was not directly interested in making films in Hindi upto 1948,till Vasan’s CHANDRALEKHA-48 had an All India release with over 700 prints, in those days.

The fifth decade of last century (40s) was very significant for Music lovers. It is during this period that along with film music, Non-Film Songs(NFS) also became very popular. Recording of such songs first began in Bengal. In fact many singers started cutting their records for private songs from 1937-38 onwards . The response of the people to such songs was so overwhelming that many new singers started their careers with NFS.

I had never heard the name of Hindi film BAABLA (1953) until one of the film’s songs raat ke raahi thhak mat jaana was posted on this blog a few months back. The information about this film on the internet is scanty. The director/s and the most of actors of the film appear to be from Bengali film industry. As per IMDB, the film had two directors – N B Agrami and Bibhuti Laha, the latter also was the Cinematographer for the film. The cast of the film included Paresh Banerjee, Manju Dey, Hiralal, Master Niren, Pahadi Sanyal, Sova Sen etc. The film was produced under the banner of M P Productions which had earlier produced films like ‘Jawaab’ (1942), ‘Hospital’ (1943), ‘Tum Aur Main’ (1947) etc.
