Normally it is believed that O P Nayyar composed music for only two Shammi Kapoor movies, viz. “Tumsa Nahin Dekha” (1957) and “Kashmir Ki Kali”(1964). But that is not correct. O P Nayyar also composed the music of “Mujrim” (1958). This was an Eagle Films Production. It was produced by F C Mehra and directed by O P Ralhan. The movie had Shammi Kapoor, Ragini, Shubha Khote, Kamal Kapoor, S. N. Banerjee, Tun Tun, Mumtaz Begum, Amrit Rana, Abdul, Agha Miraz, Ratan Gaurang, Sood, Johnny Walker, Geeta Bali, Murad, Ramesh Thakur, Padmini etc in it.

“Prabhu Ka Ghar” (1945) was produced under the banner of Ranjit Movietone. The film is directed by Wajaahat Mirza. The movie had Khursheed, Trilok Kapoor, Sulochana Chatterjee, Bipin Gupta, Prakash, Sheikh Hasan, Nagendra, Munne Agha etc in it.

This blog had songs from “Naadaan”(1951) and “Nadaan” (1971). It turns out that a movie of the same title was also released as early as 1941. Very little information is available about this movie. This movie was directed by Zia Sarhadi. The movie had Aman, Noorjahaan, Masood etc in it.

“Priyatma” (1977) was one of the lesser known movies of its time as far as I was concerned. IT turns our that it was a typical light hearted romantic comedy movie that were the hallmark of Basu Chatterji those days. This movie was a Modern Pictures Production. T C DEwan was the producer and it was directed by Basu Chatterji. The movie had Jeetendra, Neetu Singh, Rakesh Roshan, Asha Sachdev, Utpal Dutt, Reeta Haksar, I.S.Johar, Ritu Kamal, Murad, Sunder, Latika, Roshni, Ajay Kumar, Asrani, Deven Verma, Asit Sen, Jaya Prabha etc in it.

In the Hindu mythology, Gandharvas are stated to be the male heavenly spirit and in the context of music, the term is used for a highly skilled vocalist. Maharashtra had the privilege of having four ‘Gandharvas’. First, Sawai Gandharva (real name : Rambahu Kundgolkar – 19/01/1886 – 12/09/1952). He was a popular Hindustani classical vocalist and Marathi stage actor-singer. He was the first disciple of Ustad Abdul Karim Khan of Kirana gharana. One of the disciples of Sawai Gandharva was Pandit Bhimsen Joshi who later started the annual Sawai Gandharva Festival at Pune in the memory of his guru.

When I was a school kid then I found most, if not all subjects as boring. Even out of all these boring subjects, history took the cake. It was extremely difficult to remember the names of the kings, their eras, and what they did during their reign. And in case these kings happened to be born before the era of Christ then remembering their dates of birth and death was even more confusing. 🙂 Emperor Ashok, for instance was born in 304 BC and died in 232 BC. What kind of kings they were who died before they were born, was the doubt in the minds of many students of tender years.
