Eid ke din galey mil le raaja

This article is written by Arunkumar Deshmukh, a fellow enthusiast of Hindi movie music and a regular contributor to this blog.

EID MUBARAK to all our readers, wherever they are on this Globe. Today is a Happy day for the celebrations.

Having grown up in HYDERABAD-the Muslim state of the Nizam- in the 40s,( Hyderabad was annexed to India in 1948,after Patel’s ‘Police Action’), I have very fond memories of Eid. Though Hyderabad merged with India, It was an independent state till 1-11-1956, therefore the Muslim customs, manners, festivals, education and Eating habits continued to have a major influence on Hyderabad public. (In Nov 1956, Hyderabad was Trifurcated. 5 districts of Marathwada merged with Bombay state, 3 Kannada speaking districts merged with Karnataka and remaining 8 Telugu speaking districts merged into the newly formed Andhra Pradesh.( and again now these 8 districts are separating from Andhra Pradesh to form Telangana State !).

We used to celebrate Diwali and Eid with equal enthusiasm. We had many Muslim family friends and they sent us Biryani and Firni etc. Even we used to wear new clothes. I remember having gone all the way to the Mecca Masjid near Charminar in the old Hyderabad city, just to watch thousands of devotees praying together. This is one very good thing in Islam. All the festivals are celebrated together and enjoyed by the community as an unit. The differences between the Rich and the Poor are erased on this day. Lot of charity is done for the poor and generally the day is spent in prayers, meeting friends and relatives.

EID-UL -FITR OR EID AL FITR is a festival of breaking the fast. It is a celebration after the fasting month of RAMADAN(Ramzan) ends. The Eid falls on the First day of the next month of Shawwal. It is a day to show Unity. Muslims are encouraged on this day to forgive and forget any differences with others or animosity that may have occurred during the preceding year.(This will explain the loving Hug Salman and Shahrukh gave each other a few days back).

As the Muslim Calendar is based on the movement of Moon, Eid can come on different days at different places, depending on the sighting of Moon in the sky, denoting that the New month has started. However, in most other countries, Eid is celebrated on the same day as in Saudi Arabia.

In India, this being a monsoon season, the Moon may appear in the sky but not be visible due to clouds. So, the announcement of sighting the Moon in the nearest place is also acceptable, once it is announced by the Clergy.

Today’s song very clearly enunciates the Eid’s principles of Forgive and Forget and embrace each others. It is a Party scene where Eid is celebrated with tradional gusto and enthusiasm.

This is a song from film ” Teesri Aankh “-1982, a routine story of conflict between the Good and the Bad, the usual revenge story, interspersed with other emotions like mother’s love etc to make it all emcompassing !

It was directed by Subodh Mukherjee while the story and screenplay were by K A Narayan. Laxmikant-Pyarelal were the music directors who were experts in churning out songs for any occasion. The cast of the film was Dharmendra, Shatrughna Sinha, Rakesh Roshan, Zeenat Aman, Sarika, Satyen Kappu, Nirupa Roy, Amjad khan etc.

The story was a convoluted one trying to mix up several ideas in one film. The obvious result was that no idea succeeded and the film was a total rout. In fact I had never heard its name till someone had forced me to see it in 1983-30 years ago. The story was-

Kailashnath(Satyen Kappu) is an honest man. One day he brings a child to his childless wife Malti(Nirupa Roy) saying that he found it in a temple. Malti gives him mother’s love and names him Ashok. In due course of time, she gets not one but two sons of her own-Amar and Anand. Meanwhile Kailashnath is killed by Sheroo, son of dacoit Jabbar Khan(Amjad Khan) against whom Kailashnath had given evidence in the court resulting in Khan getting ” Phansi ki Sazaa”. Before dying Kailashnath reveals that Ashok was his first wife’s son. When Amar disappears, Malti suspects Ashok to have done it and she starts hating him.

Cut to -20 years later. Ashok has grown big enough to love childhood friend Barkha(Zeenie baby). Anand (Rakesh Roshan) is a spoiled brat who loves Rekha-a dancing girl. Amar (Shatrughna Sinha) is very much alive and kicking. He becomes a thief and loves D.I.G.’s daughter Sarita (Sarika).

To cut a long story short, all three brothers, Ashok, Amar and Anand unite almost at the end and fight Sheroo and his Gang. Thus they take revenge on their father’s killer. All three brothers make a presentation to their mother Malti with their choices of Brides and no wonder all is well that ends well !

On this occasion of EID my mubarakbad to all friends. Enjoy this song….

In the below video clip of the movie,
At 4:45, in the title sequences , the Playback singer`s name is written as Anuradha Powdwal, It is not ANURADHA SRIRAM. Name of the playback singer should be ANURADHA POWDWAL.

Anuradha Sriram started her career with Tamil movies. She was not there in there in Mumbai during 1982. She started her career in 1995.

Hindi geetmala and myswar wrongly credited the playback singer`s name as Anuradha Sriram. There is a link to vinyl record cover of the movie, but it is not visible clearly,I will give you the link:

below the display of vinyl covers, it is clearly written as ANURADHA PAUDHWAL`S name as one of the singers of this song.

I think the playback singer of this song KRISHNA MUKHERJEE is famous and popular actress RANI MUKERJEE`S mother.I think I am correct as the movie was produced by Shashdhar Mukherjee Productions, which is a home production banner of Rani Mukherjee`s father RAM MUKHERJEE.

Atul ji,
Few sentences of the storyline begining are missing in this post. The correct story is like this.-

Kailashnath(Satyen Kappu) is an honest man. One day brings a child to his childless wife malti(Nirupa Roy) saying that he found it in a temple. Malti gives him mothers love and names him Ashok.
To cut a long story short, all three brothers,Ashok,Amar and Anand unite almost at the end and fight Sheroo and his Gang. Thus they take the revenge of their father’s killer. All three brothers make a presentation to their mother malti with their choices of Brides and no wonder all is well that ends well !

I request you to please make additions.
Thanks.

That song is one of my Neetu Singh Favourites.

That song was badly picturised, still that song is good and I still like it.That song used to be one of Vividhbharthi Radio station favourites and they used to broadcast that song once in a week on its morning programme at 9 or 9.30 a.m.(during 80`s )

Thank you for reminding those days.
