Remembering Rafi Sb today, on his anniversary of birth.
A voice like his, and a persona like him, has been a very unique and a very different presence in the film industry. Sadanand ji wrote in his write up earlier today, about Rafi Sb’s ability to so absolutely match his voice with the personality of the on screen performer, that the viewer would forget that it is a different voice in the playback, and would simply see and hear the on screen person. This ability of his, was a natural gift that was born from the personality that he was.

There have been various songs on Shaadi and the various rituals connected to it. For example a very good bidaai song is “Chal ri sajni ab kya soche” from “Bambai Ka Babu”. Then there are songs of mehndi; in recent times a lot of Yash Chopra movies had them (do we need to enumerate them here). There are also songs where the sister is teased by a younger sibling (Sun Sun Sun Didi from Khoobsurat) or a jiji Jija song as in “Hum Aapke hain Kaun.” Then there is the iconic song in Chaudvin Ka chand “Mera Yaar bana hai dulha” by Mohd Rafi which has stood the test of time.

“Hare Kaanch Ki Choodiyaan” (1967) was produced and directed by Kishore Sahu. The movie was made by him as a launch vehicle for his daughter Naina Sahu. But unlike his predecessors like say Jaddanbai, V Shantaram and Shobhana Samarth, who managed to launch the careers of their daughters with their home productions, Kishore Sahu’s home production failed to ensure a successful film career for his daughter.

Divas of Hindi film music (20) :
——————————–
This is the last song in the series and I wanted a spectacular song to end the series. Luckily I had zoomed in to this song to feature as the last song of Asha Bhosle in the series, a month ago. For this is one song (among many for sure) I know a lot about and can write a detailed post.

Today, December 24th, 2013 is 89th birth anniversary of Mohammed Rafi. This blog has a wealth of information on Mohammed Rafi. So I will be brief on his early life and confine myself to few points which have some relevance to the song I am presenting here. Suffice to say that Rafi was a great singer in making since childhood. At the age of 10, he started singing sufi songs immediately after hearing from a faqir who used to pass through the by-lanes of his residence every day. Rafi would follow him and sing with him. That was his beginning of his interest in singing. At the age of 13, he sang in front of a restless audience who had come to hear K L Saigal and enthralled them. At the age of 16, he did his first playback singing for a Punjabi film ‘Gul Bloach’ (1940). I am reminded of a colloquial Hindi proverb which I heard for the first time during my school days – ‘honhaar birwaan ko hot hai chikne paat’ (coming events cast their shadows before). This proverb proved right in the case of Mohammed Rafi became a legendary playback singer in Hindi films.

Divas of Hindi film music (19) :

Kajra muhabbat waala ankhiyon mein aisa daala,
Reshmi salwaar kurta jaali kaa,
Sharma ke ye kyun parda nasheen
This is the famous Jodi of female singers known for their duets which are popular. They are the venerable Asha Bhonsle and the inmitable Shamshad Begum. When I chanced upon this duet by them from the movie “Chaubees Ghante” (1958), I thought this would be a good inclusion in the series.
