And so wrote the scribe. . .

“Ae Meri Zohra Jabeen”.

These first four words make an instant identification to this fabulous song that needs absolutely no introductions. The song made immortal, not just by Sahir-Ravi-Manna Da, but more so by the performance of Balraj Sahni (as Lala Kedarnath) on screen, with a coy Achla Sachdev (as Laxmi Kedarnath) getting all bashful and pink in face, realizing what a display of romanticism has been unleashed by ‘Lalaji’. A song that eventually became the signature performance for Balraj Sahni. And over the decades, the song has steadily grown on the collective minds of the people and assumed a cult status as the banner song for golden age romance. Yes, I hear this song played often at silver and golden anniversaries of marriages.

Here is a Rafi-Lata duet from the film Phandebaaz (1978). The music director is R. D. Burman and lyricist is Anand Bakshi. The film was a comedy, which I have seen on T.V. long back. Only thing i could remember is the song ‘Abhi barah nahin baje hain’. The film stars Dharmendra and Moushmi Chatterjee as hero and heroine along with Prem chopra, Helen, Bindu, Ranjeet as the gang of villians. One song of the film is posted in the blog Abhi gyaarah nahin baje hain . This should be the second song.

Chal chal chal mere saathi was easily the most popular song from the movie as far as kids were concerned. The other song from the movie, viz. Duniya mein rehna hai to kaam karo pyaare came next. Other songs from the movie were non kid songs and were “less” popular as far as kids were concerned.

Shammi Kapoor found his true identity in Hindi movies with “Tumsa Nahin Dekha” (1956). Prior to this movie, he was an underconfident struggling actor who played second fiddle to the leading ladies opposite him. Most movies (if not all) featuring Shammi Kapoor in the lead fared poorly at the box office.

This is a very delightful song from the comedy film EK DO TEEN-1953. The song is sung by Promodini Desai, Asha Bhosle, Meenal Wagh and others. I have written earlier on Promodini Desai on 8-10-2012, in the series on ‘less known singers (Desai sisters) and about Meenal Wagh, as comments on 4-5-2012, on this Blog.
