Today (6 january) is the birthday of Rameshwari. Rameshwari who ? Many people among younger generation may look askance on the mention of her name. But there was a time during 1977-78 when she was one of the hottest property in Hindi movies when she made her debut in Rajshree Production’s endearing movie “Dulhan wahi Jo Piya Man Bhaaye” (1977). This movie turned her into an overnight sensation. People (especially women) would throng to watch this movie. When this movie was released in my town, I did not take any notice of it because the title of the movie did not appeal to me and in any case I was more into watching Amitabh Bachchan movies those days. But when I noticed that this movie was having a longer run in the town that what even “Sholay” (1975) managed, then I was intrigued and I bunked my college to watch this movie. And I was bowled over ! I then watched this movie four more times, and it was only for Rameshwari.

Hullo atulites
I just returned from work and saw that we have a post for remembering Jaidev on his death anniversary. But none to wish the AR Rahman on his birthday today. So I thought let me do my bit. So here is a song from the 1992 “Roja” starring Madhu, Arvind Swamy, Pankaj Kapoor etc. This I had seen when my son was a little boy in arms and we were living in this tiny township in Tamil Nadu. The waterfall shown in the movie is in hills that were right behind our mill colony there. And I have visited it a few times in my 5 year stay there. Also today happens to be my son’s 25th birthday. All together a day of nostalgia. So I think this song fits the occasion as far as I am concerned.

Genius of Jaidev – 20
================
Radio Ceylon gave me a jolt early today morning, to remind me of Jaidev ji’s ‘Punya-Tithi’. How could I, a diehard fan of Jaidev ji’s (rather an air conditioner) fail to present his song on our Blog, on this day, in my series ‘Genius of Jaidev? I have many of his songs partially ready for posting, so I selected this one and hurriedly gave finishing touches for presentation.

When I look back at the predominant themes used in Hindi movies at various periods of time, I find that the stories in the movies tended to reflect the prevailing mood of the population at large. For instance, things were tough for county in the earlier years and the country was dependent on others for everything, including even foodstuff. No wonder that people suffered from low self esteem. Under such circumstances, movies showing the sufferings of lead actors struck a sympathetic chord among general population and would throng to watch such movies. So it is no wonder that movies dealing with sad and tragic stories were made in good numbers.

Today (5 january 2014) is the 33rd death anniversary of C Ramchandra (12 january 1918-5 january 1982). He was one of the earlier pioneers of HFM and his contributions in enriching and adding variety to it is second to none. He one one the earlier music directors to adopt western music in HFM. And at the same time, he also composed songs based on folk music as well as those based on classical music. And he was a decent singer as well who sang over one hundred songs as a playback singer. And he could deliver under very tight schedules. He composed all the songs of “Aazaad” (1955) in just a few days and that too without compromising on their quality.
