I have heard this song before on the radio, but I did not have any clue to its details.  Today, browsing online, searching for something different, I bumped into this song.  As I read the initial details, and then started to do some more checking, I realized this song has a very interesting and significant antecedents that make for a very interesting discussion.

We know that Amitabh made his debut in the 1969 film ‘Saat Hindustani’. Then onward, he appeared in ‘Anand’ (1970), and in ‘Parwaana’, ‘Pyaar Ki Kahaani’, and ‘Reshma Aur Shera’ in 1971. So far, we do not see a film listed in which he played the solo lead.  In ‘Saat Hindusani’, he is part of a team, and in ‘Anand’ he is playing a second lead to Rajesh Khanna. In ‘Parwaana’ he shares the credits with Navin Nischol, and in ‘Pyaar Ki Kahaani’ with Anil Dhawan.  And in ‘Reshma Aur Shera’, he is in a supporting role.

Then came 1972, and his first lead role opposite to Aruna Irani in ‘Bombay To Goa’.  On the up and up, this year also saw the release of ‘Bansi Birju’, ‘Ek Nazar’, ‘Sanjog’ and ‘Raaste Ka Patthar’.  He is now doing lead roles in most films, but has not yet set his claim to being in the popular super star category.  The would happen in 1973.

The year of 1973 was the significant take off.  The films – ‘Zanzeer’, ‘Abhimaan’, ‘Namak Haraam’, ‘Saudaagar’, ‘Bandhe Haath’ and ‘Gehri Chaal’. Counting in the films from this year, Amitabh had arrived.  Films like ‘Zanzeer’ and ‘Namak Haraam’ established him as a the ‘angry young man’, and with other films like ‘Abhimaan’ and ‘Saudaagar’, he also established his histrionic credentials as an accomplished performer.

Also interesting to note – his first film with Rekha is ‘Namak Haraam’; however Rekha is paired with Rajesh Khanna in this film.  Their next film together is in 1976 – ‘Do Anjaane’.  And then many more significant films to follow.

That brings us to the interesting part of this article and this song.  In fact Amitabh and Rekha were billed together in a film that remained incomplete. Sometimes in the early 1970, a film got initiated – ‘Ek Tha Chander Ek Thi Sudha’.  The work on this film was pretty much in progress – the evidence of which is the existence of this video clip of a song from this film.  It must have been 1971 or at the most 1972, and I will tell you the reason why I am certain of this time frame.  As per the information I could gather online, the story if this film is(was) based on the Hindi novel of the same name titled ‘Gunahon Ka Devta’, by the famous author Dharamvir Bharti.

It seems that the financiers and producers of this film scrapped it after seeing the unimpressive performance of Amitabh’s films in 1971 (and possibly 1972 also).  Whatever was filmed was consigned to the cans, and the film was reincarnated.  The new name of the film was ‘Duniya Ka Mela’.  Rekha was retained as the leading lady, but the hero Amitabh was replaced by Sanjay. The film was re-shot and then released in 1974.  And so that helps to establish the tentative time line for ‘Ek Tha Chander Ek Thi Sudha’.

The irony of the whole situation is apparent.  ‘Duniya Ka Mela’ was a flop. And by 1974, Amitabh had a long list of successful films in his back pocket – ‘Zanzeer’, ‘Abimaan’, ‘Namak Haraam’, ‘Saudaagar’ etc.  Not difficult to wonder what the producers would have thought.

The clip of this film was later extracted from the archives and used in the 1983 film ‘Film Hi Film’, which is a film about making films.  This film uses many clips and songs from unreleased films, that has allowed some of the unreleased material to be seen by the audiences.

That this is probably not a finished product, as can be seen from some editing deficiencies that are apparent in the clip.  But the clip itself is genuine. Amitabh is just learning how to romance with the leading ladies.  His freshness is quite apparent.

So here is a rarity from the beginning years of the career of this stalwart. And also the interesting debut that this pair made, in a film that never saw the light of the projector lamp. Small blessings to count that the video clip has survived and is available.
View, listen and enjoy.

Lyrics

ye chehra
hmmmmm mmmmm
ye zulfen
hmmmmm mmmmm
jaadu sa. . .
kar rahe hain
hain
hain
tauba tuaba. .aa..aa
aaa aaa aa
tauba tuaba
tauba tuaba. .aa..aa
aaa aaaaaa aaa
tauba tuaba
kaandhon pe resham si zulfon ke ye saaye
haaye haaye
haaye re jaan chali jaaye
tauba tuaba

tauba tuaba
haan aan aan
tauba tuaba
aise na dekho kasam se
sharam se aankh jhuk jaaye
haaye re saans ruk jaaye
tauba tuaba
aaa aaaaaa aaa
tauba tuaba

ye chehra
ye palken
ye abroo
jaadu sa kar rahe hain
jaadu sa kar rahe hain
rehne do
chhodo bhi
jaane do
hum tumse darr rahe hain
hum tumse darr rahe hain
kaajal ki dhaar se kisi ka sar na kat jaaye
tauba tuaba
haaa aaaaaa aaa
tauba tuaba

tanhaai mein milna
raste mein kyon humko chhedte ho
kyon humko chhedte ho
darte ho duniya se
aashiq se kyon aankhen pherte ho
kyon aankhen pherte ho
dekho tamaasha mohabbat na ban jaaye
tauba tuaba
aaa aaaaaa aaa
tauba tuaba

aise na dekho kasam se
sharam se aankh jhuk jaaye
haaye re saans ruk jaaye
tauba tuaba
tauba tuaba
tauba tuaba

ये चेहरा
हम्ममम मम्ममममम
ये ज़ुल्फें
हम्ममम मम्ममममम
जादू सा॰ ॰
कर रहे हैं
हैं

तौबा तौबा ॰ ॰आ ॰ ॰आ
आss आsss
तौबा तौबा
तौबा तौबा ॰ ॰आ ॰ ॰आ
आss आssssss आss

Very informative. A small correction; The novel by Dharamvir Bharti was “Gunahon ka Devta”. Chander and Sudha were the main characters of this novel.

I was keeping a track of this movie and waiting anxiously of its release until I read one day that the movie had been shelved after signifcant progress. If my memory does not fail me in last 43 years I think Amitabh was to act opposite Jaya. There were two more female characters in the novel-Pammi and Bindki.Could be Rekha was not in main lead, and either Pammi or Bindki might have been portrayed by Rekha.
I am open to correction.
Additional Input-Some critics rate this as one of the best five novels in Hindi.

This song has nothing to do with Ek Tha Chandar Ek Thi Sudha, which was based on Dharamvir Bharti’s Gunahon Ka Devta. It was under production around 1970 and had Amitabh Bachchan and Jaya Bhaduri, and music by Jaidev. Duniya Ka Mela was a completely different film which was started with Amitabh in the lead, but he was replaced by a more ‘saleable’ Sanjay Khan after this song was shot.
