The name Neetu Singh conjures up an image of a very bright and charming and ever smiling beauty. She started her life in Bollywood at a very young age – she was only 8 when we see her name appear as a child actor, in two 1966 films – ‘Suraj’ and ‘Dus Lakh’.  However, the lasting memories are of her double role of twin sisters, separated on account of their parents’ discord, as Baby Sonia, in “Do Kaliyan” (1968). The image of a small child girl with double plaited hair [‘do choti’ sounds better, no? ;)] is still retained in our mind’s eye singing “Bachche Mann Ke Sachche” in Lata Mangeshkar’s voice.

Today we are going to discuss about a song and the concerned film, which turned out to a great disappointment, despite boasting of all the ingredients that were required to make it a hit film.

The film Garam Coat-55 was made in a time when Nehru’s socialism was having a great influence on the film industry. Many IPTA workers faced the dilemma of choosing between Stark Communistic approach and socialistic pattern advocated in India. The major difference was that Nehru’s socialism never detested private business or the big private industry, but certainly a concern was voiced for the ‘Have Nots’.

Basics of classical music-part V
—————————————————-
(Genres of classical compositions and gharanas)

Several regular contributors of this blog have their own series of songs going on in the blog. Some of these series are like express trains that appear at fixed intervals. On the other hand, there are some series that are more like special trains that have no fixed schedules and they run at irregular intervals. Readers may or may not follow these series, but these series mean something to their authors themselves.

It turns out that I too have one such series of articles that appears irregularly. This series is called “Series on Basics of music”. Four articles have so far appeared in the series. Part I appeared on 21 may 2015 and the fourth part was on 17 june 2015.

Today (7 july 2015) is the 101st birth anniversary of Anil Biswas (7 july 1914-31 may 2003), one of the earliest pioneers in the field of HFM music.

Known mostly as a music composer, Anil Biswas had sung a few songs as well. This blog has as many as ten songs sung by Anil Biswas, to go with 249 songs composed by Anil Biswas.

Nightingale Noorjehaan – 2
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

I am trying to complete Noorjehan’s songs on this blog. The current film I am dealing with is ‘Hamjoli’.   Since I have all her songs in MP3 form, I was searching readymade clips on internet – specially YouTube. Almost all the songs of ‘Hamjoli’ I found there and most of them are uploaded there by Vidur Suri. I had seen that name in comments of our blog and I contacted him, thinking that he might be a person if not in my age group but a person above 50 or 60. Imagine my shocking (but pleasant) surprise, when I came to know that he is a lad of just 17 years! I salute him for taking interest in rare songs of half a century old films. Most of the ‘ Hamjoli’ songs that I propose to include on this blog are available online courtsey of Vidur Suri.

The stock photograph that is available shows a very suave and handsome Sikh gentleman.  The beard is neatly packed, the moustache is starched razor sharp, and the turban is a perfect construct.  Six feet plus, with a very fair skin – all attributes put together make up a very attractive and becoming personality.  By his own admission, he labels himself to be a romantic – and that he had to be in love to be able to create music.  The others called him a “ladies man”.

Remembering Sardul Kwatra on the anniversary of his passing away today (6th July).

Mukesh and his Composers – 3
———————————
The off-screen romance between Dev Anand and Suraiyya was well known. On-screen, if there was any song which symbolized the relationship it was this romantic duet from Vidya 1948 sung by Mukesh and Suraiyya.

Hold on. Mukesh giving playback for Dev Anand?. Well, yes, there were 3 occasions in which this rarity occurred. A solo and a duet in Vidya and a duet in Shair with Lata under Ghulam Mohammed.

Songs to Tickle Your Memory – 23
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘Aankhen’ was released in 1950.  Most people remember it for being the debut film of music director Madan Mohan.  Amongst all the wonderful songs that caught the attention of the listeners, there is this lovely melody in the voice of Meena Kapoor, that really steals away your heart – “Mori Atariya Pe Kaaga Bole, Mora Jiya Doley, Koi Aa Rahaa Hai”.  For me, it is this one song that makes this film and its music memorable.  This is one of the two songs that Bharat Vyas wrote for this film.

Remembering Bharat Vyas on the anniversary of his passing away (5th July).

Atul often says that inspite of the blog having already clocked five-digit number of songs, there are still plenty of very good songs out there that have still not found their way to the blog.

In my opinion, that is not a bad thing, because it keeps our journey of discovery interesting and exciting. Compiling songs on this blog is as much about the journey as about the destination – and we take as much pleasure in the journey as in getting closer to our destination. We have milestones, minor and major, that keep beckoning to us to approach them – and as we pass each milestone, we not only celebrate it but also set our sights on the next one.
