Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’ से ‘ह’ तक (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 37

‘ह’
“हम तो पहली ही नज़र में दे चुके हैं दिल तुम्हें”
Lingering memories, fading in, successively, in a shuffle sequence, as the charmed mind tries to follow and decipher all the fine nuances and entertaining devices, contained in this immortal, unforgettable voice – that of Rafi Sb.
It has been quite a travelogue, this series. Started way back in December of 2015, it has taken close to one year and four months to complete this journey of 37 songs, selected in the sequence of Devnagari alphabet. Starting with the very first vowel, i.e. ‘अ’ on the 24th December, the only letters missing in this series are those for which no suitable word exist independently. E.g. one may not find a word starting with ‘ष’, separate from the similar sounding ‘श’. Or the different representations of the ‘न’ sound, viz. ‘ण’ and ‘ङ्’ etc. The other consonants that are missing from this sequence are those representing the composite sounds like ‘क्ष’, ‘श्र’, ‘ऋ’, and ‘ज्ञ’ etc. The only legit letters that are missing from this series, for the reason that no more songs are available for them, are the vowel ‘ई’, and the consonant ‘थ’. All the letters of the Devnagari alphabet, with the exceptions noted above, are very suitably represented in this series.
With just about maybe half the total songs by Rafi Sab still waiting to be brought on board this musical bandwagon, in most instances I have been spoilt for choices for selecting a song. Only very rarely did I find myself with limited choices for picking up a suitable song. And practically all the songs that I am able to select, I believe we have a veritable string of gems representing each of the letters of alphabet. Here below, I present the complete list of songs that feature in this series.
And today, we come to the end of this journey, as I bring on to post the song for ‘ह’, the last letter of the Devnagari alphabet. I had mentioned in one of my recent posts in this series, that my effort has been to bring on the wonderful solo sounds of Rafi Sb, for the purpose of this series. As I would be sifting through the long lists to select songs, I came to realize that there is still many more choices available, that one can do this series all over again, with e.g. duet songs. But well, that discussion a little later.
The film ‘Apna Banaa Ke Dekho’, from 1962, carries seven songs. Of these, five have already found their place on our blog. This is the sixth song to come on board today, leaving just one more composition, sung by Asha Bhosle, to complete the Yipppeeee count for this movie.
The film is produced under the banner of Chitra Sangam, Bombay and is directed by Jagdish Narula. The lead pair in the film are Manoj Kumar and Asha Parekh, and the rest of the cast includes Nazir Hussain, Achla Sachdev, Sunder, Gautam, Johnny Whisky, Mohan Choti, Sajjan, Narbada Shankar, Ram Singh, and many other names that are not very familiar.
The work of writing songs is shared between Asad Bhopali and SH Behari. This song is from the pen of Asad Bhopali. Music by Ravi is attractive and the film is remembered for some of its more memorable songs, viz. the iconic “Raaz e Dil Un Se Chhupaaya Na Gaya” in the voice of Rafi Sb, “Hum Pyaar Tumhen Karte Hain, Hamen Apna Banaa Ke Dekho“, a duet by Rafi Sb and Asha ji, and the ‘chulbuli’ rendition of “Kachchi Dagar Panghat Ki” by Asha ji. Besides of course the timeless favorite, also by Asha ji – “Miley Hain Aap Jab Se Zindagi Kitni Suhaani Hai“.
This lesser heard song from the film is equally attractive in its own right. A light composition that is very hummable.
And so, coming to the close of this series. Ah yes, I know what you want to say, about my other pending series that are awaiting closure. Hopefully I should be getting to them shortly. Cheers.
Song – Hum To Pehli Hi Nazar Mein De Chuke Hain Dil Tumhen (Apna Banaa Ke Dekho) (1962) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Asad Bhopali, MD – Ravi
Lyrics
hum to pehli hi nazar mein
de chuke hain dil tumhen
hum to pehli hi nazar mein
de chuke hain dil tumhen
pyaar karte hain samajh kar
pyaar ke kaabil tumhen
hum to pehli hi nazar mein
de chuke hain dil tumhen
is se badh kar aur kya karte tumhaare waaste
is se badh kar aur kya karte tumhaare waaste
hum ne apni zindagi mein
kar liya shaamil tumnhen
hum to pehli hi nazar mein
de chuke hain dil tumhen
raah e ulfat mein hamaari jan bhi jaaye to kya
raah e ulfat mein hamaari jan bhi jaaye to kya
kuchh bhi ho
kar ke rahenge
ek din haasil tumhen
hum to pehli hi nazar mein
de chuke hain dil tumhen
humko tanha chhod kar
jaane se pehle soch lo
humko tanha chhod kar
jaane se pehle soch lo
do kadam chalna na ho jaaye
kahin mushkil tumhen
hum to pehli hi nazar mein
de chuke hain dil tumhen
pyaar karte hain samajh kar
pyaar ke kaabil tumhen
hum to pehli hi nazar mein
de chuke hain dil tumhen

Typically Ravi. Heard that Rafi used to often visit Ravi’s bungalow for songs. And why not. Both have collaborated with some great songs. Remember those Filmfare award songs.
