Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 1

‘अ’

Celebrating another year without Rafi Sb, celebrating another anniversary of this peerless artist. And more than anything else, celebrating another year of endless memories and ruminations.  God does not duplicate, they say. And so, for us listeners, memories is all that is there to live by.

Some weeks back, Shri RK Agarwal was in Delhi. He is another collector friend, based in Jabalpur. And his malady is the same as ours. He shared with Bakshi ji and myself, a collection of about 5,000 plus songs by Rafi. And then he handed us a list as our homework. He has prepared a list of 88 songs which are identified as Rafi songs (this from Hindi films only), but have not yet surfaced anywhere in the public domain. And so, the effort continues. It is exhilarating to know that there still are more obscure and more rare songs that need to be pursued and searched. Ah so, reasons to hope, for the unheard.

And mind you, this list is of the untraceable songs that have been identified in the Geet Kosh.  There still could be many songs not yet identified in the Geet Kosh. And in the same note, there can be more non-film and more regional songs that are still hidden from public view/hearing. Work yet to be done. 🙂

In celebration of this anniversary, I am starting another series of songs by him. The ‘A to Z’ series has already been pioneered by our dear Nahm ji. The idea of this series came at that time only, as I was working with Nahm ji to locate songs for some letters of the alphabet. And I was finding it to be a difficult task. The song are all written in Hindi/Urdu/Hindustani. From the English alphabet, letters like ‘X’ do not have an exact equivalent in Hindi, and so it is not feasible to locate a corresponding song. Then the letter ‘C’ is used sometimes sounding like ‘K’ and sometimes sounding like ‘S’.

There are a few other such peculiarities, as we try to map the English letters to the Hindi alphabet. And the thought in my mind at that time was, we should do a series that progresses according to the Devnagari alphabet. The idea remained in the back of my mind.  And then few weeks back, I sat down to compile such a list of (un-posted) songs, based on the letters of the Devnagari alphabet – from ‘अ’ to ‘ह’.

So today, I am initiating this series.  In this, I shall first address the 10 vowels in the list, and then the 40 consonants that follow. There will one or two variations, even in this, and I will address them as we come to those specific letters.

The first vowel being ‘अ’, I have selected this song as the initiating song in this series. The film is ‘Mera Qasoor Kya Hai’ from 1964. This is a social drama from the banner of Bahaar Films, Bombay.  The film is directed by the director duo Krishnan-Panju. The songwriter is Rajendra Krishan and music is by Chitragupt. Lead actors in this film are Dharmendra and Nanda, supported by Om Prakash, Shashikala, Master Babloo, Raj Mehra, Shivraj, Randheer, Sarita Devi, Kesho, Mohan Choti, Johnny Whisky, Som, Deenanath, Anwar Bhai, Ravikant, Aasi and Rohit etc.

On screen, this song is performed by Om Prakash, as he is teasing and trying to evoke a reaction from his lady love, Shashikala. The song happens inside a home with the other family members witnessing this comical wooing of sorts, all in good spirits.  Other actors that are readily identifiable are Dharmendra, Nanda and Master Babloo. Raj Mehra makes a dramatic entry at the end of the song. Besides, there are two or three more characters who are present in this clip, that I am not able to identify.  I request other knowledgeable readers and friends to help identify them.

I have picked this song also for another reason. 19th December, i.e. five days ago, it was the 96th birth anniversary of character actor Om Prakash. This song also serves as a remembrance for one of the most popular character actor cum comedians of the Hindi screen.

So starting the series with a joyful song of comic romance. Many more emotions to follow, as we go along the Devnagari alphabet, and check out the songs of this inimitable singer.

Rafi Sb forever.

Song – Akhiyaan Apni Chhupa Ke Rakh Goriye (Mera Qasoor Kya Hai) (1964) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lyrics – Rajendra Krishan, MD – Chitragupt

Lyrics

akhiyaan. . .
apni chhupa ke rakh goriye
zamaana. . sharaabi ban jaayega
akhiyaan. . apni chhupa ke rakh goriye
zamaana sharaabi ban jaayega

chaand chadhe  sab duniya dekhe
chaand chadhe  sab duniya dekhe
main to dekhun mukh yaar ka
main mar gaya allah
main to dekhun mukh yaar ka
zulfen. . mukh se hataa ke rakh goriye
zamaana sharaabi ban jaayega
akhiyaan. . apni chhupa ke rakh goriye
zamaana sharaabi ban jaayega

dekh ke tere husn ka aalam
haaye
dekh ke tere husn ka aalam
dil hai deewana tere naam ka
main mar gaya allah
dil hai deewana tere naam ka
palken. . yun na jhuka ke rakh goriye
zamaana sharaabi ban jaayega
akhiyaan. . apni chhupa ke rakh goriye
zamaana sharaabi ban jaayega

teri gali mein aana jaana
teri gali mein aana jaana
kaam yahi hai subh o shaam ka
main mar gaya allah
kaam yahi hai subh o shaam ka
jalwe. . kuchh to bachaa ke rakh goriye
zamaana sharaabi ban jaayega
akhiyaan. . apni chhupa ke rakh goriye
zamaana sharaabi ban jaayega
