Hullo Atuldom
Sometimes a sudden tune or memory or word sends the mind looking for a song or visual connection. So, a few days back it was a tune in my head that sent me looking for today’s song. I remembered, rather vaguely, that the song had Ashok Kumar dancing away merrily. I remember having seen it eons ago on Doordarshan – the one source of most of my nostalgia.
I hunted down the song. I found the name of the movie it was from. Searched for it on YouTube. Enjoyed my first encounter with that movie thoroughly. It has been listed on IMDB.com under “action, crime, drama” genre. It should also have been categorised as “comedy”.

8th December is the 75th birthday of Rinku or Begum Ayesha Sultana Khan who also is known by the name Sharmila Tagore. What was not known is that she was born in Hyderabad. (I didn’t know, the stalwarts of the blog may be aware). She looked so delicate and fragile in “Kashmir Ki Kali” (1964) – her Hindi debut, having debuted in Bengali in 1959 through Satyajit Ray’s “Apur Sansar”; the need to protect her from Pran must have come naturally to Shammi Kapoor. She has a super-sweet smile too with deeeep dimples that form whenever she smiles. It was not as if she excelled only in glamourous baby-doll type of roles; she was comfortable even when she played the roles of mother and daughter – Chanda/ Kajri- in Gulzar’s “Mausam” (1975). 1975 saw her in five movies “Mausam”, “Chupke Chupke”, “Faraar”, “Amanush”, “Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka” and the character she played in each of them were completely different from each other.

Today’s song is from film Mera Imaan-1934.
I have been writing on old films and songs since 2012. Most of my posts are for films of the 30s and the 40s. However, I have also done innumerable posts on songs and films of period 1951 upto as latest as 2018. That is because, I believe, good music and good films exist in all eras. Only their percentage differs. Additionally, one’s likings generally decide what is ‘Good music’, based on his taste. Taste develops depending on one’s exposure. If I don’t listen to a song of 2019, how am I to conclude if it is good or bad ? Without analysing these factors, people are in a hurry to brand films and songs as good or bad.

(#Music Composer-Singer-Bappi Lahiri#1)
Welcome all, to this post which is another of those posts of mine that was planned way back (in February 2019, to be precise)when I presented a song from the 1977 movie ‘Paapi’.
Music for this movie ‘Paapi-1977’ was composed by Bappi Lahiri. Though I had not watched this movie ‘Paapi-1977’, I liked the song that I then presented. Today’s song, also by Bappi Lahiri, came up in the list of suggestions that appeared in ‘YouTube’ with that song.

Today’s song is from film Utho Jago-1947, a completely obscure film.
1947 was a very important year, not only for India, but also for the Indian Film Industry. Creation of Pakistan , on the basis of Religion, and Partition of India prompted an unprecedented exchange of people across the borders. Millions of people left their life earnings and ran to the other side of the border to save their lives. In this melee, millions died and millions lost their properties. More than any other industry, film line was affected more because it had the maximum mixture of Muslims with Hindus and films were made at Bombay as well as Lahore. These two centres now belonged to different countries and the film industries at both places were in turmoil.
