In the Indian film industry, it is very difficult for a producer and director to balance their ideals with money making in a film. Very few film producers have become successful in producing films combining the social purpose with commercial consideration. Prabhat Films and its director, V Shantaram was one of the earliest examples who produced and directed socially purposeful films like ‘Duniya Na Maane’ (1937), ‘Aadmi’ (1939), ‘Padosi’ (1941) etc. Fazli Brothers – Hasnain and Sibtain successfully produced and directed Muslim reformist social films like ‘Qaidi (1940), ‘Maasoom’ (1941), ‘Fashion’ (1943) etc. One of the risks of producing reformist social films is that of the backlash such films may face from the fanatics in religious groups. Hence, the commercially minded producers, by and large, avoided producing such ‘reformist’ films.

Today (7 may 2020) is the 159th birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore (7 May 1861- 7 August 1941).
Everyone knows a lot about Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore. He was not just a Nobel Prize winning poet, his acccomplishments, achievements and influence go much more farther than that. Curiously, his influence on our life is often subtle and goes unnoticed. But it is very much there.
He has influenced Indian movies, including Hindi movies as well. He was in fact the person writing the national anthem of India (and subsequently Bangladesh as well). The national anthem of India was already included in a Hindi movie called “Hamraahi”(1945) beore it could become national anthem. So, Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore got credited as a lyricist and music director in this Hindi movie posthumously, but before India could achieve her independence.

Maangne Se Jo Maut Mil Jaati
Kaun Jeeta Is Zamaane Mein
Lata ji’s voice is so truly a match for the sadness oozing from this song, that seems to be so steeped in dejection and sorrow. The film – ‘Sunehre Kadam’ – the last one in Hindi cinema that he composed for in 1966. And as if this expression was not adequate, the film also has another equally melancholic song to match the depths of misery – “Na Baaz Aayaa Muqaddar Mujhe Mitaane Se”.
Bulo C Rani – music director, whose talent was never in question, and yet, in his career he stayed forever, in the sidelines and under the shadows of the bigger names in film. We celebrate his 99th anniversary of birth today, 6th May.

Regional language songs in Hindi movies- 1
————————————–
I had heard of ‘Rabindra Sangeet’ many years back in the context of our national anthem. Without knowing much about Rabindra Sangeet, in my younger days, I used to think that like Hindustani classical music, Carnatic classical music, folk music, Western classical music etc, Rabindra Sangeet was a different genre of music. (Now that I know it, I was not off the mark then). When I got associated with our Blog about 10 years back, I started looking at the Hindi film songs in a wider perspective encompassing, among other things, the genres of and the artists behind the Hindi film music. It was during the course of writing articles for the Blog covering songs of the golden period of Hindi film music, singers, lyricists and music directors that I came to know much about Rabindra Sangeet and its influence in Hindi film songs.

Today’s song is from an old film Duniya kya hai-1938.
Silent films era started from 1912, when 2 silent films were made and exhibited. However, they were not feature films made completely by Indians. The cinematographer was British and the films were processed in England. Thus Dadasaheb Phalke’s totally indigenously produced feature film ‘ Raja Harshchandra’-1913 became the first fully Indian Silent film and it was hailed as the beginning of the Silent film era. In that year one more film ” Mohini Bhasmasur” was also made.

Today (4 may 2020) is a day when no notable HFM personality was born. But on this day, one person totally unconnected with HFM was born in a far away land 365 years ago. He would invent a musical instrument that has played a vital role in the development of HFM. Movies of 1950s and 1960s were not complete if this instrument did not appear in at least in one song. In one movie, this instrument has even appeared in four songs !
