Blog Day :

6293 Post No. : 19480

Hullo Atuldom

10th October is the birthday of an actress whose work I simply love to see ever since I saw her in the 1980 released “Khoobsoorat” and I shall never tire of telling this. I know the readers of this blog are aware of my partiality towards a few actresses of the period of 1970s & 1980s- Hema Malini, Rekha, Zeenat Aman, Parveen Babi, Jaya Bhadhuri- if I need to name them. I try not to miss writing a post for the birthdays of these ladies.

So, here I am, wishing Rekha (who was born Bhanurekha) a very Happy Birthday. Hope she continues to be beautiful, charming, and continues to make the (odd) appearances in front of audiences; at least on reality shows on television if not in films.

Rekha made her debut in 1958 as a child artist in a Telugu film and and as leading actor in a Kannada film in 1969 when she must have been barely in her teens. She faced the camera to obey her mother (initially); but later worked on her looks, acting technique & command over the Hindi language resulting in a well-publicised transformation.

Here, I would like to add that her father was the famous Tamil actor of the 1960s Gemini Ganesan & her mother Pushpavalli (who’s mother tongue was Telugu) was also an actress. That is, Rekha was conversant in Tamil & Telugu when she was chosen to play second lead in the film “Anjana Safar” (which released after along delay as ‘Do Shikaari’). The filmmaker went to Pushpavalli’s house to give Rekha a screen test, dictating a number of sentences in Hindi, which were rewritten by Rekha in Latin script (I think that means English), and then told her to memorize it. A few moments later, Rekha recited the sentences completely and the filmmaker was impressed by her native Hindi-speaker-like voice. Though she was signed for ‘Anjana Safar’ her first release (as is well-known) was ‘Sawan Bhadon’ in 1970 establishing her as a rising star.

Last year, on the occasion of the lady’s birthday I had shared this post. In there, I had listed out all the songs featuring Rekha, that I had shared on her birthdays. Of course there have been other occasions too where I have shared songs with Rekha in the frame, but this is the list of special birthday posts over the last few years.

2022 Hanste hanste kat jaaye raste With Rakesh Roshan
2023 Aaye hain wo mazaar pe ghoonghat utaar ke With Vinod Mehra

The above table made me realise that I haven’t shared single song featuring Jeetendra with Rekha for the birthday specials. I looked up on google, to see how many films had, the two actors, as romantic pair or otherwise. Here is my list (hope it includes every film that had Rekha & Jeetendra.)

[27] Jaan Hateli Pe (1987)
[28] Khazana (1987) {special appearance by Jeetendra}
[29] Souten Ki Beti (1989) {Jaya Prada 3rd angle in triangle}

[36] Om Shanti Om (2007) {they were in the title song but not in same frame}

Wow!!! 36 films with the names of these two in there cast!!! That must be the most for any pair, ever!!! The 1st film where they were paired together ‘Ek Bechara’ has two songs left to get YYIIPPEEEEd. ‘Anokhi Ada’ their 2nd together has been YYIIPPEEEEd. According to the blog’s “List Of Songs Moviewise”, their 3rd together “Santaan” is one short of YYIIPPEEEEhood. (I am not sure, I think the film is two short of ‘all songs covered status’). The following songs of “Santaan” are present on the blog.

Song Posted on Remarks
Tu miley to poochhoon tujhse 22 July 2013 Multiple version song, considered single version song in HFGK
Pappu ki mummy tu badi nikammi 7 April 2017
Aaj khushi se jhoom raha saara parivaar tera 13 October 2020

We are having the next song today which is sung by Asha Bhosle, written by Verma Malik & composed by Laxmi-Pyare. The song has a rustic Rekha out to get her mom-in-law Bindu and mami-in-law (played by Ashoo) do household chores just as they had done to Nirupa Roy who was Bindu’s mom-in-law. Of course, in the film, when Nirupa Roy plays maid in Bindu’s house, Bindu is unaware of their relation to each other. But, Jeetendra’s character is upset about the way his grandma has been treated so he is out to set things right in his own way with Rekha’s help.

Here is the song for the day. Happy Birthday to the erstwhile duckling who transformed herself into a swan.

Nalini Ji

Thanks for the post. Rekha is truly a versatile actor. You have studied and presented good info on her filmography. My favourite Rekha films are ‘Umrao Jaan’ ( classic) & Khoobsoorat.Of course she has been in many more successful films.

I agree Rekha was versatile.

Khoobsoorat & Umrao Jaan are diametrically opposite styles
