#The Decade of Seventies – 1971 – 1980 #

In this post I am taking readers to the music of seventies. This song is from the movie ‘Taraana-1979’.
‘Taraana-1979’ was passed by the Censor Board on 31.07.1979. The cast of this movie has Ranjeeta, Mithun Chakraborty, Dr Shreeram Lagoo, Urmila Bhatt, Jayshree T., Sharat Saxena, and Om Shivpuri. They were supported by Yunus Parvez, Janki Das, Sundar, Bhagwan, Shakeel, Satyabhan Sinha, Naresh, Pardesi, Master Sandeep, Shobha Khote, Mala Jaggi, Uma Khosla, and Jagdeep. The story, screenplay and dialogues of this movie were written by Khalid & Narvi. Editing of this film was done by Mukhtar Ahmed.
This movie has twelve songs contributed equally by lyricists Ravindra Rawal (6 songs) and Tilakraj Thapar(6 songs). Usha Mangeshkar, Shailendra Singh, Aarti Mukherjee, Jagjit Singh, Dilraj Kaur, Chetan, Meena Patki and Varsha Bhonsle were the playback singers. Music for this movie was composed by Raamlaxman. One song of this movie that got very popular was ‘Sultana Sultana meraa naam hai Sultana’. This song achieved 15th position in the annual programme of Binaca Geetmala 1980. Another song from this movie ‘ham tum donon saath mein bheeg jaayenge barsaat mein’ was also a popular song of its time.
This movie was released when I was 11 years old and I missed out on watching this movie during its first run. But its song ‘gunche lagey hain gehne’ that was frequently heard around, left a lasting impression on my mind . I finally watched this movie on an online platform in 2024 and I liked it a lot. It is a nice movie to watch that has offers the standard masal of those days, viz love story ,wealthy vs poor conflict, social status clashes , gypsy clan , lovers getting separated due to class conflict and getting united finally etc. The movie also has a lost and found sub-plot in it that gets revealed towards the end.
The background for this song is :-
when the Fathers (Om Shivpuri and Dr Shreeram Lagoo) of our two lovers Rani (Ranjeeta) and Chhote Thakur (Mithun Chakravarty), have a ‘status-clash’ the Big Thakur (Om Shivpuri) rejects the proposal of marriage of Rani and Chhote Thakur. After this, the girl’s father who also is a head of his banjaaraa camp decides to leave the Thakur’s land, thus separating the two lovers – i.e. Shaym and Raani/Raadha. We have a judaaee song at this juncture in the movie.
After getting separated from Chhote Thakur, Rani fails sick and is bedridden. Meanwhile Chhote Thakur sets out in disguise of a singing banjaaraa to search for his love and to meet her. As he sets out singing a song and reaches near the gypsy camp’, Rani regains her consciousness and even walks out of her tent-house and easily identifies the belee i.e. her lover in disguise. As usual for Hindi films the others present around there with Rani fail to identify this guy till the young banjaaraa sardaar i.e. Jagira (Sharat Saxena) finally unmasks him. He has to do it, after all he also want to marry Rani and become the sardaar of the kabilaa. So this song is the showdown song between Belee and Jagira (Sharat Saxena), before the actual physical fight breaks out after the end of the song. Jagira sees the horse of Chhote Thakur near the banjaaraa camp, realises who that person is, and he simply walks in and removes the moustache of the Belee revealing to everyone that it is none other than Chhote Thakur.
This song takes place in the movie just before the climax. The singers are Shailendra Singh for Mithun Chakravarty, Usha Mangeshkar for Ranjeeta, Chetan for Sharat Saxena and Meena Patki for Jayshree T.
They are accompanied by chorus for the other artistes present in the picturisation of this song. Almost the entire star cast of this movie is present in the picturisation of this song except Om Shivpuri and Urmila Bhatt.
