The song under discussion is from the movie ‘Painter Babu-1983’. It was a special movie for teenagers of those days like us.
Board examination for Xth were upon us and obviously that was uppermost in our minds. At the same time, we were not immune to the other topics of our interest, viz cricket, Hindi movies, and listening to Hindi movie songs on radio.
‘Painter Babu’ was being promoted on radio just as we were preparing for our board exams (of class Xth). Songs of this movie, that were frequently played on radio was a hot topic of discussion in my friend circle. The radio promotion of this movie had its intended effect on us and we became curious about this movie and its debutant lead pair. The fact this movie was produced by Manoj Kumar was in any case an added attraction. AThe fact that Manoj Kumar’s brother was making his debut (with three others also makingtheir debuts), had our friend’s circle excited about this movie. The music of this movie was composed by music duo Uttam Singh- Jagdish Khanna. These names were new for me. We finally got to watch this movie during tsummer vacations after our board examination was over.
This movie ‘Painter Babu-1983’ failed to live upto its promotion. But its beautiful songs were liked and enjoyed by music lovers like me. Some of its songs were already popular like ‘kab talak shamma jali yaad nahin’. This song to my mind was the most liked song from the movie. But, surprisingly, this song didn’t make it to the annual list of ‘Binaca Geetmala’ of that year. This song was the first song from this movie to be posted on the blog on 11.07.2012.
Subsequently, two more songs from this movie have been added on the blog on 20.05.2021 and 09.03.2022 respectively. These are the songs ‘o mere sajan barsaat mein aa’ and ‘ham kuchh bhee rakh le naam uskaa’.
I liked the songs of this movie and I have shared the abovementioned two songs here.
Today I am presenting the fourth song of this movie. This is one of the two songs of this movie that made it to the Annual List of Binaca Geetmala-1983.
‘Painter Babu-1983’ was directed by Ashok for ‘V.I.P. Films, Bombay’. This movie was passed by Censor Board on 31.03.1983. It was produced by Manoj Kumar who also wrote the story and did editiond movie and had done the editing of this movie as well.
The cast of this movie has Rajiv Goswami (debutant and in title role), Meenakshi Sheshadri (debutant), Neelima (debutant), and Virendra Sharma (also a debutant). They were supported by Rakesh Bedi, Madan Puri, Om Shivpuri, Krishna Dhawan, Pinchoo Kapoor, Bandini, Ram Mohan, Kamaldeep, Bharat Kapoor, C.S. Dubey, Birbal, Lalita Kumari, Meena T., Tun Tun, Sundar Taneja, Rajan Kapoor, Madhup Sharma, Shyam Jeet, Walia, Heera, Bhinda, Leela Mishra, Jankidas, Sudhir, Mohan Choti, Shammi, Dinesh Hingoo, Aruna Irani, Kamini Kaushal and others. Singer Mahendra Kapoor had a special role in this movie.
‘Painter Babu-1983’ has seven songs written by three lyricists’ viz. Manoj Kumar, Qamar Jalalabadi and Qateel Shifai. As mentioned above Music for this movie was composed by Uttam Singh–Jagdish Khanna. This was their first movie as independent music directors. Lata Mangeshkar, Mahendra Kapoor, Kishore Kumar, and Bhupinder Singh had given their voices to the songs in this movie.
Today’s song is sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mahendra Kapoor. The song is picturised on Meenakshi Sheshadri and Rajeev Goswami. The debutant actress Neelima is also present in the picturisation of this song.
With scorching heat in most part of the country still continuing and some people still njoying vacations of their children with them find this song like a breath of cool air with its mukhda which is ‘hamkaa lai chal yaaraa thhandee thhandee nahar ke kinaarey’. 😊Apparently some schools are re-opening after vacation in some parts of the country, this lovely song can still be enjoyed by them. 😊
