This article takes up for discussion a film which was recently released on a TV channel after four decades from the date of censor certificate. The film’s shootings started sometime in mid-70s with the title. ‘Aawaaz’. Songs were recorded in 1978. The film was delayed and got censor certificate on March 13, 1986, under a new name, ‘Saugaat’ (1986). The songs of the film were released in 1986. It is stated that the producer of the film stalled its release due to some unresolved financial issues. Finally, the film was premiered on Zee Classic on February 06, 2026, and on YouTube on March 17, 2026. The film has Shashi Kapoor and Shabana Azmi in the lead roles. Shabana Azmi has a double role in the film as twin sisters.

The film was produced by D Jayaraman and was directed by Prayag Raj. The other supporting cast of the film include Danny Denzongpa, Pichoo Kapoor, Shivraj, Dev Kumar, Padma Chavan, Helena Luke,  Jayantimala, Priyamala, Krishan Dhawan, Sunder, Ram Mohan, Sapru, Gajanan Jagirdar, Master Tito, Baby Shadia etc. Madan Puri, Rajendranath, Kadar Khan and Vijay Arora made their guest appearances.

The audio and video quality of the film is superb despite the inordinate delay in releasing the film. The story of the film is as under:

The film starts with postmaster, Ram (Shashi Kapoor) and his wife, Laxmi (Shabana Azmi) welcoming the groom’s side on the occasion of their daughter, Krishna’s marriage. One of the guests (Lalita Kumari) recognises Laxmi as Mrs. Singh who was in her village for three years as a school teacher. Ram is surprised as he has been married to Laxmi for the last about two decades. The groom’s father insists that before the marriage ceremony can proceed, he wants  to know who is the mother of the bridegroom – Laxmi or Mrs. Singh.

Ram calls Laxmi and asks her to clarify about the confusion to the satisfaction of the groom’s side. She reveals for the first time that Kalpana is not her daughter and she is innocent. She had not revealed this earlier as Ram himself had told her that a lie which does not harm anyone is equal to a thousand truths. Thereafter Laxmi narrates what had actually happened and the story goes into a flashback mode.

Many years earlier, Laxmi had come to the village as a school teacher where Ram was working as a postman. The school was run by a landlord (Madan Puri) whose writ worked in the school. Fed-up with his interference, Laxmi decides to quit as a teacher. However, Ram persuades her to continue in the school for the sake of the students’ future. Ram is well-known in the village not only because he is the postman but also for helping anyone in the village who is in need for his moral and financial support within his meagre income. Laxmi has liked Ram for his honesty and for his helping nature.

In the adjoining town, Sangram Singh (Danny Denzongpa) runs the business of black marketing of food grains and he has told his men to buy all the foodgrains of the village. However, Ram prevents the smuggling of the food grains from the village because of which Sangram Singh trashes Ram badly and drops him in the village to remind the villagers that they must hand over all the food grains to him. However, with the arrival of Laxmi, Sangram Singh retreats as both were the college-mate and Sangram Singh has a soft corner for Laxmi.

Laxmi stays with her uncle (Shivraj and her younger sister, Annu (Shabana Azmi in double role). Both are twin sisters and look alike. However, due to an accident in her childhood, Annu has lost her voice. She is the devotee of Lord Ram. Although Laxmi is elder, she wants Annu to get married first. In the village, a Ramleela has been organised  where Annu is present and so is Ram. The actor playing the role of Ravana gets annoyed on the actor playing the role of Ram  on some issue and trashes him. However, Ram in the audience trashes the actor playing Ravan. Annu gets impressed with Ram and has started loving him. Ram, on the other hand, also loves her, thinking her to be Laxmi who has also fallen in love with Ram.

One day, Annu, with her sign language, reveals Laxmi that she is in love with Ram. Since it is her utmost desire that Annu should get married before her, Laxmi sacrifices her love for Annu. However, her uncle is worried as Ram is not aware that Annu has lost her speech. Laxmi assures him that Ram is an understanding person and it will not be a problem for Annu after the marriage. Annu and Ram gets married. In the night, during the dance performances for the newly married couple, Sangram Singh visits the marriage venue and creates a pandemonium at the venue assuming that Ram has married Laxmi, his love interest. He trashes Ram very badly and in the stampede,  Annu gets seriously injured. Both are hospitalized. The marriage guests overpower Sangram Singh and hand him over to the police.

Laxmi and her uncle meet the doctor (Pichoo Kapoor) who is their family friend and apprised him of the situation in which Annu has got married to Ram. The doctor finds out a solution and tells Ram that his wife is well except that she has lost her speech. Ram is more interested in her well-being than the momentary loss of her speech. When Annu meets Ram, he always calls her as Laxmi. It dawns to her that Ram has married thinking she is Laxmi. Annu feels extremely guilty that she has deprived Laxmi of her Ram. She even thinks of committing suicide. Laxmi convinces Annu that it is in the best interest of all the three of them not to do anything which would create more upheaval in their life.

After being released from the hospital, Ram and Annu go back to their house and effectively their first night after the marriage. He put Annu at ease by saying that love can be expressed without speaking.  Soon Annu gets pregnant. She delivers a baby girl. Five years have passed. Ram gets promoted as Postmaster. Sangram Singh, who has escaped from the prison, starts blackmailing Laxmi that she should get married to him. Otherwise, he will reveal to Ram that  Laxmi has got him married to Annu by deceit. Laxmi escapes from Sangram Singh’s clutches and clandestinely visits Annu  advising her to leave the village with Ram as there is a danger to their life from Sangram Singh. But before Laxmi could leave, Ram returns home and thinking her to be his wife, he indulges in his usual fun with her while Annu has gone out.

Ram has gone to meet his guardian (Krishan Dhawan) to see his well-being. Sangram Singh is after Laxmi who has escaped from him. He kidnaps Annu from her house assuming her to be Laxmi. Laxmi follows him when at one point, all three come face to face. He shoots at Annu thinking her to be Laxmi. Before dying Annu gets her hand on Sangram’s Singh’s gun and shoots him dead. Annu dies on the lap of Laxmi. Her uncle arranges Annu’s funeral while Laxmi enters Annu’s house as pretending to be Annu, Ram’s wife and brings up the Annu’s daughter, Kalpana as her own.

After Laxmi’s narrations in front of the guests of the groom’s side, Ram announces to them that he is now much more proud of Laxmi than before. The groom’s side is also overwhelmed by Laxmi’s sacrifice and give their assent to the marriage ceremony. However, the priest says that since the truth has come out that Ram and Laxmi have not been married, they have to get married first before they can do ‘kanyadaan’ ceremony of their daughter.  The film ends with Ram getting married to Laxmi, before the marriage of their daughter.

The film has four songs written by Anand Bakshi which were set to music by Laxmikant-Pyarelal. The film makes a debut on the Blog with its first song, “Ye Phool Chaand Taare, Yaanee Haseen Saare” rendered by Mohammed Rafi who sings for Shashi Kapoor.

The context of the song is that after discharge from the hospital, the newly married Ram (Shashi Kapoor) and Annu (Shabana Azmi) who he assumes her to be his beloved, Laxmi (Shabana Azmi in double role) return home for their first night. Annu had lost her speech due to some accident in her childhood. However, in the hospital, doctors tells Ram that Laxmi (Shabana Azmi) has lost her speech after she got injured due to the stampede created by Sangram Singh. By this time, Annu has come to know that Laxmi and Ram are in love with each other but her sister has sacrificed her love for Annu for which she feels guilty. When Ram notices Annu to be bit reserved, he thinks that because she has lost her speech, she is upset. So, to give her comfort,  he sings a song for her saying that love can be  expressed through glances, gestures and hints and it is not necessary to express through voice.

Song – Ye Phool Chaand Taare (Saugaat) (1986) Singer – Mohammed Rafi, Lyricist – Anand Bakshi, MD – Laxmikant Pyaarelal

Lyrics:

mohabbat mein nahin ki aur haan ki kya zaroorat hai
nigaahen baat karti hain zubaan ki kya zaroorat hai

ye phool chaand taare
yaanee haseen saare
ye phool chaand taare
yaanee haseen saare
hote hain bezubaan sab
karte hain bas ishaare
lagte hain kitne pyaare pyaare
ye phool chaand taare
yaanee haseen saare

mat socho dil ki baaten
mat socho dil ki baaten
samjhoonga main kahaan se
shaque ho to bin kahe hi
tum kuchh kaho wahaan se
main na jawaab doon to
dono jahaan haare
ye phool chaand taare
yaanee haseen saare
ye phool chaand taare
yaanee haseen saare

dhadkan tumhaare dil ki
mujhko bula rahi hai
haan haan mein sun raha hoon
aawaaz aa rahi hai
tum chup ho
tum chup ho bolte hain
par honth ye tumhaare
ye phool chaand taare
yaanee haseen saare

ghazlen kahaaniyaan hain
ye shokhiyaan tumhaari
mujh se jo kah rahi hain
khaamoshiyaan tumhaari
mil kar na kah sakenge
shaayar adeeb saare
ye phool chaand taare
yaanee haseen saare
ye phool chaand taare
yaanee haseen saare
ye phool chaand taare
yaanee haseen saare
hote hain bezubaan sab
karte hain bas ishaare
ye phool chaand taare
yaanee haseen saare
yaanee haseen saare
yaanee haseen saare
