The versatility of Saigal Saab never ceases to amaze. Given that only 185 recordings of his songs are available, may the history of Indian cinema have been different, had Saigal Saab lived a longer life.

“Bhanwraa” (1944) is among the lesser known movies of K L Saigal as far as I am concerned. Of course, even lesser known movies of those days used to have wonderful music in them, and the songs of this movie are no exception.

During old days (1950s to 1980s), a K L Saigal song was played as the last song of the programme “Puraani Filmon ke geet” in the Hindi service of Radio Ceylon (later renamed Sri Lanka Broadcasting Corporation) broadcast from 7-30 AM to 8-00 AM. But they were under no obligatio to broadcast different K L Saigal songs every day. So the same few songs were constantly recycled in that programme.

We have so far discussed as many as ten songs from “Bhakt Surdas”(1942) and that includes lots and lots of K L Saigal songs. Talking of K L Saigal songs, we have been discussing one K L Saigal song daily for the last six weeks and so far we have discussed as many as 75 K L Saigal songs. If we continue to discuss one K L Saigal song a day, then we will reach the century of K L Saigal songs in a month’s time.

This wonderful song is from the film Tadbeer (1945). The film was produced and directed by Jayant Desai, and featured KL Saigal, Suraiyyaa, Mubarak, Rehana, Jillo, Salvi, Reva Shankar, Shalini, and Shashi Kapoor as a child actor. Born in 1938, Shashi would be just seven years when this film was released. It is possible that this could be his debut movie or definitely one of the very first few movies that he acted in. (I have not been able to track specific information on this).

Here is an absolute gem of a song that has been lying hidden all these decades.
This song is from “Nayi Kahaani” (1943). I am not only surprised that music lovers have forgotten this song, I am even more surprised at the fact that the print of this movie is still available and that too in a reasonably pristine condition, going by the print quality of this picturisation. So kudos to the people who have preserved the print of this movie in such a good condition.
