Kishore Kumar was around in the Hindi movie playback scene for two decades from 1948 to 1968 but all these while he was on the fringes. But a combination of many circumstances, that are well chronicled, ensured that changes of epic proportions took place in the Hindi movies schemes of things in late 1960s. Whe the commotion was over and things settled down, the old order had changed giving way to the new. The old timers (heroes, singers, music directors) suddenly found themselves upstaged and evicted from the scene in the new order.

When Atul wrote to me in his usual polite way the other day that I must write a post on this song I was taken aback. I have been a (mostly silent) reader of his blog and I have even written a few pieces for it but none for a very long time. Perhaps he thought I might like to do this piece on Don’s “Khaike paan banaraswala” as most of my early pieces were on Amitabh Bachchan’s movies of that era as I am an unabashed AB fan. What he did not know when he wrote to me is that I had another “qualification” for doing this piece; I studied for five years in Banaras.

“Bemisaal” (1982) is a movie which was produced by Shri Lokenath Chitramandir. Debesh Ghosh was the producer and this movie was directed by Hrishikesh Mukherjee. This movie was based on a novel by Ashutosh Mukherjee. This movie was a big budget movie starring the then superstar Amitabh Bachchan too. The starcast contained Amithabh bachchan, Vinod Mehra,Rakhee, Aruna Irani, Deven Verma, Amaranth, Harindranath Chattopadhyaya, Asit Sen,Om Shivpuri,Gautam Sarin, Goga Kapoor,Vijay Sharma, Samar Roy, Prathima devi, Johney, Anjan Shrivastav, Master Mayur, Master Vikaas, Baby Khushboo,Master Romeo etc.

“Mili” (1975) was a copy of “Anand” (1971) which in turn was a copy of a Japanese award winning movie that Hrishikesh Mukherji had seen in a film festival sometime in late 1960s. I do not now remember the name of this movie but I had read about it in magazines of 1970s. I request other readers to tell me the name of this movie which inspired these movies.

Today Amitabh Bachchan is regarded as the actor of the millenium, but that was not the case in the early days of 1970s. Few bigwigs in Bollywood gave him much of a chance to come good. Most people were in fact quite dismissive of him. Matters were not helped by the fact that most of his earlier movies flopped at the box office.
