It is my observation that the careers of many actors in Hindi movies were made and sustained thanks to the great music that their movies had. It is difficult to imagine these movies becoming hits without their hit music. And as we all know, Hindi moviegoers are initially attracted towards movie halls because of the music and these songs are often one of the biggest selling points of these movies. Movies without songs have a hard time finding distributors.

“Daaku” (1955) was a Basant Pictures Production. It was directed by Aspi Irani. This B grade movie had Shammi Kapoor, Shashikala, Kuldip Kaur,W. M. Khan, Anwar, Babu Raje, Sheikh etc.

Today (8 september) is an important date for music lovers of Hindi movie songs. It was on this date in 1933 that Asha Bhonsle was born. Today she turns 79. And she has been giving playback in HIndi movies since 1948. So she has been a playback singer for the last sixtyfour years ! Simply unbelievable.

Today (6 september) is the birth anniversary of Yash Johar (6 september 1929- 26 june 2004). His real name was Anand Raj Johar. He worked in Ajanta Arts (Sunil Dutt’s banner) and later Navketan (Dev Anand’s banner), before he established his own production house called Dharma Productions in 1976.

Today (4 september) is Rishi Kapoor’s birthday. It appears only yesterday that he made his debut as a teenage hero in “Bobby” (1973). But in reality that was 39 years ago ! How time has flown! Now it is his son who is a teenage heartthrob and Rishi Kapoor these days plays old man’s roles.

By 1977, Rekha’s career was going nowhere and movie critics commented that she was wasting her career like Faryal. Faryal was held as the gold standard of career wasters those days, though I suppose Randhir Kapoor was not far behind her.
