Genius of Jaidev – 24
———————————-

The 1957 film ‘Anjali, produced by Kala Kunj, Bombay (to the surprise of younger generation, our state was called ‘Bombay’ then) and directed by Chetan Anand had music by our Jaidev with lyrics by Nyay Sharma.  This theme song was often repeated in the film. The film starts with melodious ‘alaaps’ by Lata, following the hymns ‘Buddham Sharanam Gachchhaami ….’. Later on there is a chorus lead by Rafi. I am sure this must have been repeated several times.  In the end the video of the last stanza surprisingly emerges on YouTube. (This raises our hope that there must be video of the film available in video cassette form, which may surface anytime, in future, to our delight.)

Since the title portion would not qualify individually, to be posted on our Blog, having no singing words, I combined it in the beginning of the main Rafi and chorus song.  Again the short video of the last stanza emerged, so that too, was combined for this presentation. (achchha kiya na?)

Since Sheila Ramani and Chetan Aanand are seen in the concluding scene, there must have been two heroines in this film – Sheila and Nimmi – for lucky Chetan Aanand.

Jaidev, composed nine melodious tunes, out of ten, for this film. But as far as this classic Buddha prayer is concerned, he totally copied lying down with closed eyes, the Sinhalese original version.

Today’s song is perhaps the first ever song of S D Batish that I am discussing here. Not that I avoided his songs or his songs were not good enough for me, but may be all his popular songs were already discussed here by others and I just did not get any of his songs for my purpose. It is purely a coincidence. Actually, I have lot of respect for S D Batish, who did a marvellous job of promoting Indian Music in UK and USA. He is one of the rare people who left the film world, but continued serving the Music by turning a corner in his life.

This is a very famous Bhajan, originally written by Gujarat’s Adikavi Narsinh Mehta. This Bhajan has been sung by most of the famous singers including M S Subbulaxmi and Lata Mangeshkar-both Bharat Ratna s. There are various versions sung by many other singers. Whatever the Language, this Bhajan is sung in its Traditional tune only.

Mukesh and his Composers – 4
——————————–
This beautiful Thursday morning let us listen to a bhajan by Mukesh in praise of Shirdi Sai Baba.

The philanthropic and humanitarian deeds of Mukesh are well known and documented. No article on Mukesh is complete without a mention of these activities during his life time. Distribution of blankets to the poor in winter, insistence to share the same boarding as that of his music arrangers during out-station concerts, performing shows for children and neighbours without charging any fees etc are few of the many examples. Also, being the senior-most among many of his contemporaries, he was often a peace maker amongst various disputes that arose in the film fraternity amongst artists. He was often called a noble soul for all these reasons.

After finishing my last song series on Talat Duets, I started thinking about a New Series. While browsing through my saved Drafts in G Mail, I realised that there were at least 100 songs and their links, lying unused in the Draft Box. All these handpicked songs were the songs that had remained unused as they were not used in that series. Whenever I want to do a series of say 10 songs, I am prepared with at least 15-16 songs. Many times, during the series period itself, I discover some new song suitable for that series and such songs then make back door entry in the series, with some of the earlier planned songs left waiting in the wings. Such songs thus add up to the number of undiscussed songs lying unused.

When I think of Hindi Film Industry, I always ask a question to myself. Why was it that so many successful and talented artistes died so unceremoniously and in tragic circumstances ? Why did those who achieved unsurpassed stardom have such unhappy and sad ends to their lives ?

We know Sahir Ludhianvi as a poet of the highest quality, a romantic at heart, and a rebel.

But for me, he was much more than this.

MISSING GEMS FROM THE GOLDEN 50s…. Song No….7
————————————————————————————

Today’s song is a lovely Meerabai bhajan, from the film ‘Toofan Aur Diya’ (1956), sung by Lata Mangeshkar. This song was very popular in those days and even today you will sway with its melody. The tune will linger with you for quite some time, I assure.
