There are two types of films, for which sure shot captive audience are readily available anytime. They are-
1. Religious or mythological films and
2. Tear jerkers or films depicting extreme pitiable conditions of women, like, for example- Aurat teri yehi kahani, Bhabhi or bhabhi ki choodiyan etc.
Some producers play smart and combine the two types of movies, like Jai Santoshi Maa or Krishna Sudama or Solah Somvar Vrat etc.

Ae ri main to prem deewaani

When I saw the lyrics of this song from “Jogan” (1950), I thought that this song was discussed long back, but when I checked the list of songs of “Jogan” (1950) appearing in the blog, this song was missing much to my surprise. Then I realised that the song that I was confusing it with was the song Ae ri main to prem deewaani mera dard na jaane koye from “Naubahaar” (1952).

“Neelkamal” (1947) was produced and directed by Kidar Sharma. The movie had Raj Kapoor and Madhubala in lead roles. The movie also had Begam Para, Nazira, Rajendra, Shanta Kumari, Baby Indira, Kumar Sahu , Pesi patel, Subhashini etc in it.

In the 30s and 40s, two groups of female actor-singers emerged prominently. The first group excelled in both acting and singing. Barring a few exceptions, they confined to playback singing on themselves. This group consisted mainly of Khursheed, Kanan Devi, Noor Jahan and Suraiya. The second group though started their filmy career as actor-singer in a smaller way, later they concentrated mainly on playback singing. This group comprised mainly of Rajkumari, Amirbai Karnataki, and Zohrabai Ambalewaali.

“Bharthari” (1944) was a Navin Pictures production. It was directed by Chaturbhuj Doshi. The movie had Surendra as Bharthari, Mumtaj Shanti as Queen Pingala and Pahadi Sanyal as guru Gorakhnath,alongwith Kajjan, Sulochana, Dave, Babar etc.

“Guddi” (1971) was produced by N C Sippy and Hrishikesh Mukherji and directed by Hrishikesh Mukherji. The movie had Samit Bhanj, Jaya Bhaduri, Asrani, Sunita Sanyal, Vijay Sharma, A K Hangal, Keshto Mukherjee, Chandra,, Lalita Kumari, Utpal Dutt, Bhagwan etc with Dharmendra in guest appearance.

In a book ‘Vedanta Treatise’ I have with me, four types of yogas have been prescribed for attainment of salvation. They are Bhakti (devotion), Gyaana (knowledge), Karma (activity) and Hata (compulsion). It is generally believed that devotion is the mother of all other yogas. Without devotion, all other yogas would be incomplete for attaining the objective. In this context, I recall an introduction by late C Rajagopalichari on a LP of M S Subbulaxmi’s immortal ‘Bhaj Govindam-Vishnu Shashtranamavali and I quote a part of it from the CD I have with me:
