Kishore Kumar, who was externally a jovial and boisterous character had a sensitive side to him as well. He could sing serious and sensitive songs with the same ease with which he rendered fun songs. When it came to producing movies, Kishore Kumar has produced rip roaring comedy viz. “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi” (1958) and “Jhumru” (1961), but many of his subsequent movies dealt with sensitive topics. These movies were far ahead of their times and the Indian masses were by and large not evolved enough to appreciate Kishore Kumar’s subsequent movies on serious topics, namely “Door Gagan Ki Chhaaon Mein”(1964), “Door Ka Raahi” (1971), “Door Waadiyon Mein” (1982).

Jagdeep and Nanda played lovebirds in “Bhaabhi” (1957). Two years later, they play brother and sister in “Barkha” (1959).

Both these movies had another thing in common, viz lyrics by Rajinder Krishan and music by Chitragupta. Jagdeep had got a song to sing in “Bhaabhi” (1957), namely Chali chali re patang meri chali re. Here in “Barkha” (1959), we find Jagdeep and Nanda singing a bhai-bahan duet as they are travelling in 1950s style, viz on a bullock cart. 🙂

These days I am discussing the songs of “Shart” (1954) and by now I have discussed as many as eight songs from this movie. Despite discussing so many songs from this movie, we are noswhere near exhausing all the songs from this movie. We are only around the halfway mark as far as the songs of this movie are concerned.

“Teesri Kasam” (1966) was a movie which was adapted from Phanishwar Nath “Renu”‘s Hindi novel called “Maare Gaye Gulfaam”. I have neither seen the movie nor read the novel, but Santosh Ojha, a contributor to this blog has given a nice summary of this novel in his blog . Reading this summary, I realised what a moving tale this novel and this movie was. Now I can understand why Shailendra was so heartbroken on finding his dream project failing at the box office. The fact that Indian movie audience were not mature enough and sensitive enough to appreciate a movie like this was quite unfortunate indeed.

Here is another song from Achhoot Kanya. This has to be one of the first bullock cart songs. In the early years of the past century, the hero and heroine did not, or could not get physical during romantic numbers.
