Chanda jaa Chandaa jaa re jaa

There are songs with similar opening lines in “Ziddi” (1948) and well as in “Private Secretary” (1962). Both these songs are sung by Lata and both are superb songs.

Many people may only be aware of the new “Parineeta”, but in reality, the original and real “Parineeta” is the movie that was based on Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay’s story and it was picturised in 1953. It was made in Bangla, Hindi, and may be in other languages too.

When I started this blog,remembering which songs I had posted and which were yet to be posted was easy in the beginning. One could remember it in one’s mind. But as the number of songs increased, I needed to keep track of them, because sometimes ( on two or three occasions) I repeated the same song. Thankfully some of my alert readers pointed this fact out to me, and I replaced the duplicated song with another song.

I had once mentioned that the version of song seen in the movie and heard in the records was often different because they were recorded on two separate occassions. Imagine a great song being recorded not once but twice ! Once for the movie sound track, and once for the record company.

We all know that Shammi Kapoor married Geeta Bali in 1950s, but did he work with her in any movies the way his nephews (Randhir Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor) worked in movies with their wives ? I am told that “Mujrim” (1958) was one such movie.

I do not have much information about “Lagan” (1955). It had Nalini Jaiwant, Sajjan, Shammi Kapoor and Naaz in it, among others.

Though this song talks of “Chanda”, “raat” etc, which are found in “Chaayaageet” songs, this song from “Chhoo Mantar” sounds more like a dance song. After all, O P Nayyar is the music director of this song, and his music tended to be dance music. In “Chaayageet” songs, we do not expect the lovelorn protagonist to dance, he/ she is just expected to sing in a slow tempo. 😉

Madan Mohan is mostly known for his immortal ghazals, but he has created other genre of music as well. In fact, for much of 1950s, his music direction style was not well defined. His music during this period often resembled the music of many other sources.
