The theme of a married woman who chooses her domestic responsibilities by giving up her flourishing singing career has been covered in some Hindi movies. The woman’s resultant emotional toll from her loneliness and the internal conflict between as a housewife and her unfulfilled aspirations was first explored in the film, ‘Anuradha’ (1960) as far as I know. In this film, Leela Naidu gives up her singing career to marry an idealistic doctor, Balraj Sahni who is completely engrossed in his work to serve the poor villagers. A somewhat similar situation is depicted in ‘Guide’ (1965) when Waheeda Rahman is forced to give up the dancing career by her husband, archaeologist, Kishore Sahu who is more passionate about his archaeological discoveries than about his wife. In Both these films, suppression of passion makes wife’s life miserable though the end result in both these films are different.

‘Abhinetri’ (1970) has a similar theme in which Hema Malini gives up her successful career as a dancer after her marriage with Shashi Kapoor. A scientist who gets completely engrossed with his research work in his laboratory. The film was produced and directed by Subodh Mukerji under the banner of Subodh Mukerji Productions. The cast included Shashi Kapoor and Hema Malini in the lead roles supported by Deb Mukerji, Nirupa Roy, Nazir Hussain, Asit Sen, Nazima, Badri Prasad, Bela Bose etc.

Today’s song is from the film Hanste Ansoo-1950.

Film Hanste Aansoo-1950 was produced and directed by K.B.Lall (born in 1911 at Meerut-U.P. Known for films like Lal Haveli-1944, Lal Dupatta-1948 and Hanste Aansoo-1950 etc. Died on 25-8-1975. He wrote the story as well as the screenplay. Lyricists were Shewan Rizvi and Majrooh Sultanpuri. Music was by Ghulam Mohammad. The cast of the film included Madhubala (17 years), Motilal (40 Years), Gope, Manorama, Jankidas, Mirza Musharraf etc.

The film, as such, though an ordinary one, was very successful. One of the main reasons for its success was that it was the FIRST Hindi film to be awarded an “A ” certifictae by the film Censor. The Censor also passed several (some of them were ridiculous) remarks on the film in general.

Sometime in early 1980s, I had heard a non-film song, ‘mohe aayee na jag se laaj…..ke ghunghroo toot gaye’ which was rendered by Pankaj Udhas. At that time, I did not think much about this song but its hook line ‘ke ghunghroo toot gaye’ periodically reminded me of the song. After the death of Pankaj Udhas in 2024, his old non-film songs started ‘bumping up’ on the video sharing platforms during which I heard this song in full after many years and liked it, more so because of its lyrics. Since then, I was planning to cover this non-film song for the Blog. But I was not sure about the genesis of this song, particularly when I came to know that the song was written by Pakistani poet and lyricist, Qateel Shifai. So, I kept the song in hold until I got some clarity about it. After doing some reseach on the internet, I am now in a position to write the article on the song.

Today’s song is from the film Tulsi Vivah – 1971.

By coincidence, the film was also made by Tulsi Films, Bombay. It was directed by Candrakant (Gaur). The film’s music was by a “once upon a time” famous, but now at the end of his career, Music Director C. Ramchandra. Lyrics were by Pradeep. The cast included Dara Singh, Jayashree Gadkar, Randhawa, Azad, Abhi Bhattacharya, Anita guha, Rajan Haksar and many others. If only the cast names are shown to anyone, he will surely think that the film was a stunt/action film, what with names of pehelwans like Dara Singh, Randhawa and Azad ! I have seen this film. Dara Singh has done the role of Shiv ji in it. Whenever he talked, you would feel that he would lift and throw the person in front of him!!
