Today’s song is from the movie ‘Konduraa-1977’.

“Konduraa (The sage from the sea/Maanas Ka Maharshi)” was directed by Shyam Benegal for ‘Ravi Raj International, Madras’. It was produced by K. Venkat Rama Reddy.

The first social drama TV serial (also called soap operas) on Doordarshan was ‘Humlog’ (1984). The huge success of this TV serial prompted other producers to come out with soap operas which needed to be telecasted only on Doordarshan as no private TV channels were in operation at that time. They had to find the free slots on Doordarshan which became difficult as years passed. Doordarshan generally accepted the TV serials ranging from 13, 26 and at most 52 episodes with few exceptions. The restriction of the number of episodes meant that more number of TV Serial makers could be accommodated apart from ensuring the TV serials were not unnecessarily stretched at the cost of their qualitative contents.

In the mid-1930s, Fearless Nadia was making waves in the role of a stunt woman in Wadia Movietone films, ‘Hunterwaali’ (1935), ‘Miss Frontier Mail’ (1936) ‘Hurricane Hansa’ (1937) and ‘Lutaaru Lalna’ (1938). So, films in the genre of ‘action/adventure’ becomes one of favorites of many film producing studios. Vijay Bhatt of Prakash Pictures also fell in line and made action/fantasy films around mid-1930s. They produced ‘His Highness’ (1937), ‘State Express’ (1938), ‘Hero No.1’ (1939) etc. ‘Bijlee’ (1939) was another Prakash Pictures’ film in this genre which was directed by Balwant Bhatt. The star cast included Jairaj and Pramila in the lead role supported by Munshi Khanjar, Zahoor, Shirin Bano, Athavale, Gulab, Jaal Writer, Shyam Sundar, Lallubhai Nayak etc.

While doing preparatory work for the article on the film ‘Dahek’ (1999), I came across a few names of the films where the lovers commit suicide/or get killed as their parents/society were against their relationship. One of such films was ‘Ek Baar Chale Aao’ (1983), about which I was not aware of. Probably, the film may have received a lukewarm response from the cinema audience. The film had Farooque Shaikh and Deepti Naval in the lead roles. I have watched them in ‘Chasme Baddoor’ (1981), ‘Saath Saath’ (1982) and ‘Katha’ (1983). They had also worked together in films like’ Rang-Birangi’ (1983), ‘Kisi Se Na Kahna’ (1983) etc. With these films, they had become one of the popular lead pairs in Hindi films in the 1980s. Then, how is that the film under discussion was almost forgotten? I got the answer by watching the film.

Hullo Atuldom

4th August is very important for lovers of Hindi film music. It is the birth anniversary of Kishore Kumar who was fondly addressed as Kishore da. His birth name was Abhas Kumar Ganguly. He was the youngest among his siblings Kumud Lal Ganguly a.k.a. Ashok Kumar and Kalyan Kumar Ganguly a.k.a Anoop Kumar, being the older brothers. His sister was married to Shashadhar Mukherjee, co-founder of Filmistan Studio and later Filmalaya Studio. Kishore da’s wives (he had married four times) were Ruma Ghosh, Madhubala, Yogeeta Bali and Leena Chandavarkar who were all actresses. His son Amit Kumar is also a singer, actor & composer. As the saying goes “like father like son” or “walking in his father’s footsteps”. All this I am mentioning to show that Kishore Da was part of a family that has been in the entertainment industry from the 1930s (when Ashok Kumar began his career in the industry.)
