Hello everyone!

It has been SUCH a long time since my last post here that I’ve forgotten how to even write posts.

So this one will most probably be a short one, unlike my past marathon posts.
I say “most probably” because I might intend a short post, but once I start writing, my thoughts end up having a life of their own. I would be an editor’s worst nightmare. 😊

Anyway, let’s see how it goes.

Ok, so the main reason for this post is a sort of coincidence that I’m taking as a sign to make me write.

During 1970s, when I was in my teens, I used to maintain records of cricket. Nowadays, we have access to cricket records with the click of a few buttons on computer or mobile phones but that was not the case 50 odd years ago. At about the same time, I also started noting down the lyrics of Hindi movie songs that I liked. Those days were pre HFGK days when we had no idea how many movie songs were created by then. The claims of 25000 plus songs and 28000 songs by individual singers were entertained and published even in Guiness Book of world records those days !

Hullo Atuldom

It is 13 years since the passing of the first Superstar of Hindi cinema. I shall hold back the adjectives that are normally showered on this ICON who had a way to charm the audiences. His smile, emoting eyes etc. had the film viewing public, specially the female viewers swooning all over him, his images and even his CARS. A kind of mania no other actor has managed to replicate since then. He walked into their hearts riding an open top jeep, singing a song composed by S.D. Burman, in the voice of Kishore Kumar. Though that was not his first foray into films.

Let me first clarify that we are remembeing actor/producer Rajesh Khanna who veered towards politics (he contested the 1991/1992 Lok Sabha elections & won the ’92 Bye-election) briefly.
He was a winner of the 1965 All India Talent Contest, organised by United Producers and Filmfare magazine. Actors turned filmmakers Subhash Ghai & Dheeraj Kumar were also contestants in that year.

Today’s song is from the Mythological film Navdurga-1953.

!953 was a year Music ruled the films. Various genres were tried by filmmakers to attract the audience. After the Partition, the new blood flowing in all sections of filmmaking was trying new ideas and experiments. However, in all these changes, one genre still ruled the audience and that was the Religious films. Besides the “Golden Era of Film Music”, the 50’s were also the decade for the religious films. From 1951 to 1960, for a period of 10 full years, as many as 124 Mythological films were made, averaging one new religious film every month for 10 continuous years.

Navdurga-1953 is a story of Navratri and the power of Maa Shakti in 9 different forms. Navratri, literally a celebration of nine nights, is a festival that actually occurs once in every quarter, i.e. four times a year. Of these, the celebration that occurs in the month of Chaitra and the month of Ashwin are the better known and more popular Navratri celebrations. The Chaitra navratri ends with the celebration of Ram Navami, the birthday of Lord Ram. The Ashwin Navratri is followed on the next day by Dushehra, the celebration of the victory of Lord Rama over Ravana, the King of Lanka. Besides these two, the navratri celebrations also occur in the months of Aashaad and Paush / Maagh. These are also called the Gupt Navratri, or the lesser known or secret Navratri.

The street songs comprising any public places have been a part of many Hindi films which became prominent in 1950s and 60s. Such songs generally get picturised on lesser-known actors. Within the category of street songs, there is an interesting sub-category in which the street singer conveys the inner feelings of the main actors, usually hero/heroine present to watch the street singing performance, who keeps them within their hearts. Usually, a male actor would be playing harmonium or any other musical instrument and the female actor would be dancing. The onlookers will be the bystanders among whom the film’s main actors who would be witnessing the performance. There are many songs under this sub-category of street songs. I have listed below few such songs of 1950s and 60s:

Today’s song is from the film Kaise Kahoon-1945.

The film was made by Pancholi Art Pictures, Lahore, owned by Dalsukh Pancholi. In those days, there were only 3 filmmaking centres of Hindi Films. Bombay, Calcutta and Lahore. Bombay made Hindi and Marathi films, Calcutta made Bangla and Hindi films and Lahore made Punjabi and Hindi films. Though the youngest was Lahore, in a short time, it had made some popular and hit Hindi films.
