‘Born with a silver spoon’ is a phrase which has often been used with reference to a person born in a rich family. It would not be out of place if If I coin a similar pharse ‘born with the golden Hindi film songs’ with reference to Bharat Bhushan and Pradeep Kumar. They were blessed with the best of the songs of the golden era by picturising on them. There was not much to talk about their acting capabilities but they were so lucky in their filmy career that they paired with some of the most prolific heroines with their impeachable acting capabilities. No doubt, most of their films became the box office hits. They are known today even to the new generation mainly because of the songs they got to sing on the screen rather than for their acting ability.

“Mera Naam Joker” (1970) was an ambitious movie of Raj Kapoor which unfortunately failed big time at the box office when it was released. Talat Mehmood had sung most of his duet songs mainly with Suraiyya, Geeta Dutt, Lata Mangeshkar, Asha Bhonsle and Sudha Malhotra. I get a feel of an affinity between the singers on the one hand and the actors on the screen on the other hand when I listen to Talat Mehmood-Geeta Dutt duets. This combination is pleasing to my ears and gives credence to what is intended in the lyrics. The song which comes to my mind in this context is ‘armaan bhare dil ki lagan tere liye hai’ from JAAN PEHCHAAN (1950).

There are some songs which I feel are better heard than watched. The evergreen song “aapki nazron ne samjha pyar ke kaabil mujhe” was one of my favourites and I had pinned great hopes on its video clip. I was disappointed the moment I watched the video clip of this song. Even now whenever I listen to this song on the audio clip, Darmendra’s expressionless face comes before my eyes which act as a speed breaker in the smooth flow of an otherwise melodious song.

During late 1950s, Shashdhar Mukherji and Agha Kashmiri were discussing the next movie of Fimalaya in the formers residence. Shashdhar Mukherji wanted to sign up Shammi Kapoor, but Agha Hashra Kashmiri pointed at the youngster arriving at the home and told Shashdhar Mukherji-“Here is the hero of your movie”. That younster of none other than Joy Mukherji, Shashdhar Mukherji’s son. Shashdhar Mukherji was skeptical but he entrusted the job of grooming Joy Mukherji as a hero on Kashmiri.
