Well yes, the things are kind of busy in life at this time (now why should that be an excuse?) :). In 1949, our Hindi film music got richer by the induction of a new lyricists team of Hasrat Jaipuri and Shailendra and the new music director duo of Shanker-Jaikishan to the Hindi film industry. Raj Kapoor was their god father and the film BARSAAT (1949) was to decide their destiny. The film became a super hit and this combined team of lyricists and musical duo ruled the Hindi film industry for the next two decades with their down to earth lyrics with masterly compositions. It is said that with successes at every stage, ego problems do crop up leading to crack in the team. It was creditable that the entire team of Hasrat Jaipuri, Shailedra, Shanker-Jaikishanand Raj Kapoor lasted until the death of Shailendra in December 1966 and enriched the golden era of Hindi film music with their contributions.

I am totally overwhelmed with the response to my first write up. I want to thank Atul ji for posting it almost immediately. Thus encouraged I am now ready to do my second post. What could be the second step after a Lata solo ? No prizes for quessing, it has to be a Rafi solo. Mohammed Rafi solo by O.P.Nayyar to be precise. I would have preferred to have a solo song by S D Burman. I like O.P.Nayyar songs a lot, but S D Burman and Madan Mohan’s songs are my favourites. I have a few song by them lined up for discussion, Atul ji permitting.

“Aarti” (1962) was one of the first (if not the first) movie of Rajshree Productions. It was directed by Phani Majumdar. The movie had Ashok Kumar, Meena Kumari, Pradeep Kumar, Shashikala, Peace Kanwal, Jagirdar, Rajendranath, Vijaya Choudhry, Surekha, Niranjan Sharma, Ramesh Deo, Chandrima Bhaduri, Keshto Mukherjee etc in it. That sounds like quite an impressive starcast, though quite a few of them were newcomers at that time.

In 1950s, we had a genre of songs where a lady, alone or accompanied by other co workers carrying basket on her head would be going on her way to her work while singing a song. The hero and heroine would be at hand to listen to the song. The song in a way would express the feelings that the leading duo have for each other but are too shy to express themselves. alternatively the song may set the tone for the movie. Such a song is there in “Aar Paar” (Kabhi aar kabhi paar ),”Do Aankhen Barah Haath” (Sainya jhoothon ka bada sartaaj nikla), CID (Boojh mera kyaa naam re ) etc. I am trying to think of a name that describes such songs, but I am unable to find an appropriate descriptive name for such a genre of songs. I request our readers to help out in suggesting a name for such songs.

The starcast had Rajendra Kumar, Saira Banu, Prem Chopra,Rajendranath, Parveen Choudhary, Jagirdar, Randhir, Jagdish Raaj, Sulochana, Chaman Puri, Kamal Kapoor, Madhumati, David Abraham, Durga Khote, Hari Shivdasani etc in it.

Shola ulfat ka bhhadka ke

Looking at the video of this song adds considerably to my general knowledge about movies. For example, I was not aware that Rajesh Khanna had worked in a movie called “Aurat”(1967) and that too opposite an actress as obscure as Naazima. But then Rajesh Khanna himself was a newcomer those days.
