Today’s song is from “one of a kind” of a film – Kinaara-1949.

This was a film made by New India Theatres, Bombay. It was directed by Ambalal Dave, for whom it was the only and the last individually directed film. Same year he had directed one more film jointly with Narayan Patel (another first and last timer) – Roop Sundari-1949. Not only this, but Madhusudan Acharya had written the film’s story, screenplay and dialogues too. He had acted in this film as a Hero and also sang one solo and one duet in the film. These again were the first and last time songs in any Hindi film. Now the readers will realise why I called this film “one of a kind’ film !

(Lyricist – Naqsh Lyallpuri-4) (Debutant Movie)

We have seen in the past that some of the obscure movies, ‘B’ grade movies and even ‘C’ grade movies have given us many musical gems. This has been happening from the beginning of Hindi Film Music History.

The song under discussion is one such song, which according to me deserves to be a better known song, if not a well known song. Like most music lovers, I too was unaware of this song till recently. This song is from an obscure movie from the decade of seventies. The title of the movie is ‘Hazaar Haath-1978’.

Mukesh and his Co-Singers –11
————————————————

Having covered the songs of Mukesh under the composition of Usha Khanna, I was always curious to list the duets of Usha Khanna and Mukesh.

No, it is not just picking up the duets from the table in the above post as they also sang under other composers; albeit quite a few songs.

Today’s song is from the film Guru Ghantal-1956.

There was a film in 1937 also with the same title. The story of both the films were on similar lines. But do you know what the meaning of the word Guru Ghantal is ? I did not know, but I found out from a Hindi-English dictionary, published in 1889. This was compiled by ” The Rev. T.Craven, M.A.”, in Lucknow. Many years ago, I had a habit of roaming on the streets of big cities like Bombay, Delhi, Calcutta or even smaller cities like Poona, Lucknow or Hyderabad, in search of second hand old and rare books. I found this dictionary of Hindi-English-Hindi and Urdu-English-Urdu words for sale in Lucknow. It was quite a thick book and occupied considerable space in my suitcase. The book is extremely useful and I have to use it very carefully because, being so old-135 years- its pages have become brittle and delicate. It is one of my prized possessions !

While going through the filmography of the music director, Vanraj Bhatia recently, I found that he had done the music composition mostly for the off-beat or ‘middle of the road’ films, including those of Shyam Benegal’s films. Among his Bollywood masala films which are few, ‘Surkhiyaan’ (1985) was one of them which came as surprise to me because a couple of songs from the film which I had heard long back, sounded to me like that of R D Burman. The title of the film gave the hint that the story may have something to do with print media. With Naseeruddin Shah as a lead actor, I thought that the script of the film would be good for him to agree to work in the film. I watched the film a couple of days back on this assumption.
