Hullo Atuldom

Beginning this post with a few thoughts that have been running through my head. What is the time or age to define something as old?

I have been observing people around me, for the last few years of my better half’s tenure, at his last workplace. I am saying “last workplace” as he has decided to call it a day; inspite of loving what he has achieved over the last 45 years. People consider him young enough to open up about their joys & sorrows. His colleagues cannot believe or don’t want him to hang his boots yet. Of course, I am very proud of all that his co-workers (he doesn’t call them subordinates) have to say about him.

Today’s song is from the Mythological film – Mohini-1957.

During the decade of the 1950s, maximum religious, Bhakti pradhan and Mythological films were made. Among them, most had roots in some or the other Puranas, Ramayan or mahabharat, but there were also films having the tag of ‘ Mythological’ film, which had absolutely no connection whatsoever, known or unknown, to any of the mythological stories. I have read all 18 Puranas, Ramayan and Mahabharat. I do not claim to know each and everything from there, but even in the film booklet no mention is made of the source of the story. Film Mohini is one such film. With 100s of Gods and 1000s of stories, it is easy to make up a story resembling any genuine story. Looks like that, like Arabian Night stories, here too adulteration has entered ! A simple trick of adding a lot of magic scenes can enable a story to become a Mythological or Arabian Night story !

After the box office success of the Tamil film, ‘Thevar Magan’ (1992), written and produced by Kamal Hasan with Sivaji Ganesan, Kamal Hasan, Revathi, Gautami and Nasser in the main roles, Kamal Hasan decided its remake in Hindi with himself in the lead role and Dilip Kumar in Sivaji Ganesan’s role. It was his intense desire to work with Dilip Kumar. However, Dilip Kumar declined to work in the film as he had almost retired from the films. So, Kamal Hasan kept the Hindi remake of the film in the backburner until he sold the film’s rights to his friend, Priyadarshan for its remake in Hindi as ‘Viraasat’ (1997).(Source: Hindustan Times, May 29, 2022).

‘Nazar Andaaz’ (2022) is produced by T Series and Kathputli Productions and is directed by the debutant Vikrant Deshmukh. #the Decade of Eighties – 1981 – 1990 #
————————————————————————
(“The Musical Mehtas” – Neena Rajendra Mehta)

In my journey of listening of music and collection of cassettes there was a phase in 1986 when I was introduced to ghazals. I may have been listening ghazals from films but then I was not aware more about this genre and also of the many non-film ghazals already making their foray in the music industry. It was because of my boss who was from Punjab and a great admirer of ghazals that I got to listen to the so many gems from this genre. I was staying at Parli Vaijnath then. It would be appropriate here that I reproduce some part of the text (edited) which I had written earlier in my post for the song “Sarakti Jaaye Hai Rukh Se Naqaab Aahista Aahista” here on the blog which will give a background for today’s article too.

There are some prominent Hindi film actors whose names are mainly associated with ‘middle of the road’ and ‘off-beat’ cinemas though they have also worked in mainstream Hindi films. The names that comes to my mind are Naseeruddin Shah, Om Puri, Girish Karnad, Shabana Azmi, Smita Patil, Dipti Naval etc. Almost all of them made their Hindi film debut under the direction of Shyam Benegal. I was not aware that Rajeshwari Sachdev was also one of such actors until recently while checking her filmography. She has worked on stage, television and films. She is also a singer and a dancer.
