Hullo Atuldom

It has been four years today, to the date to be exact, since the lovers of Indian music lost their beloved Lata Mangeshkar. When I say Indian music I mean Bhav-geet, Film Sangeet, Bhajans and any other genres that we can think of. Lata Didi, as she was addressed by the multitude of her followers, was the go-to voice (a modern day term for first choice) of all music composers across generations. Lata Mangeshkar’s voice was the that one heard on waking up through the various bhajans played in the morning hours. If the listener was a fan of Hindi film songs then it would be any song from ‘jyothi kalash chhalke’, ‘jaago mohan pyaare’, almost all the songs of Raj Kapoor’s ‘Satyam Shivam Sundaram’ (if one is of the newer generation) or any of the numerous bhajans that exist in the non-film category.

Today, February 6, 2026, is the 86th birth anniversary of Bhupinder Singh (06/02/1940 – 18/07/2022), singer, composer and guitarist who regaled the listeners with his natural and wounded feeling voice. Gulzar had said about him in some context that Bhupendra was a bit of a fakir, just like Sufis and Sadhus. They look lazy but they are very focused and attentive. There is no greed or haste in him. Whatever Bhupinder does, he does from his heart. Because of his Sufiana spirit, Bhupinder Singh could render ghazals beautifully.

Born in Amritsar in 1940, Bhupinder Singh started his singing training in his childhood with his father, who was a music professor in Khalsa College in Amritsar. But his interest was more towards playing musical instruments. Bhupinder Singh grew up in Delhi after his father shifted there and completed his high school. In Delhi, he got further training from Ratilal and Gopal Krishan Acharya. From his teenage days, he had started singing ghazals to his friends in the tunes set by himself. Side by side, he developed interest in playing Hawaiian Guitar which he learnt by self-studies. He got a job in AIR Delhi as a singer and the musician under Satish Bhatia, another Hindi film music director.

#the Decade of Forties – 1941 – 1950 #
—————————————————————

The song in this post is from an eighty-four year old movie ‘Shobha-1942’. Music for this movie was composed by Vasant Desai. When I saw that only one song from this movie have been posted on this blog so far, it piqued my interest to look for other songs from this movie. The other reason is the composer i.e. Vasant Desai. I love his music and there are many songs composed by him which I like very much. So, today I am presenting the second song from this movie ‘Shobha-1942’.

This movie ‘Shobha-1942’ was directed by Kumarsen Samarth for ‘Wadia Movietone, Bombay’. It was a ‘social movie’. The cast of this movie had Shobhna Samarth, Shahu Modak, Kusum Deshpande, Karan Deewan, Sulochana Chatterjee, Vimal Sardesai, David, Jaal Khambhata, Putlibai, Master Chhotu and others.

‘Shobha-1942’ has six songs as listed in Geet Kosh Vol-II (1941-1950). Pandit Indra is the lyricist for all the six songs. In Geet Kosh the name of playback singers for this movie are mentioned as Shobhna Samarth, Shahu Modak, and Miss Kalyani. However while presenting the first song from this movie on the blog our inhouse encylopeadia Shree Arunkumar jee has mentioned that the songs mentioned as sung by Shobhna Samarth are in fact in the voice of Saraswati Rane. Here is what he has mentioned in the post with the song ‘uhoon-uhoon-shikaari-na-khel’…

Film Shobha was a Wadia Movietone presentation. It was directed by Kumarsen Samarth, husband of Shobhana Samarth. The Lyricist was Indra and the composer was Vasant Desai. The film had 6 songs. With today’s song, film Shobha is making a Debut here. As per HFGK, 3 songs are sung by Shobhana Samarth, because on the record, her name is printed, but Girdharilal Vishwakarma ji has confirmed that these songs are sung by Saraswati Rane. In the discography of Saraswati Rane also these songs feature.

(Shree Arunkumar jee has also gave the story of this movie in his post above. However I am not reproducing that here. Readers can read this interesting post here )

Today we are going to listen to the second song from this movie which is in the voice of Miss Kalyani. It is a song of ‘after effects or side effects of falling in love’ :). Lyrics are by Pandit Indra Chandra and music is composed by the great composer Vasant Desai.

Let us listen to this song now …

Song-Wo dil mein humko yaad karen (Shobha)(1942) Singer-Miss Kalyani, Lyricist-Pt Indra Chandra, MD-Vasant Desai

Today’s song is from an obscure film, but it is a special song because it is a duet sung by Meena Kumari – The Tragedy Queen – and A.R.Oza.

This Ranjit Movietone film was directed by Manibhai Vyas (27-4-1920 to 14-11-1993), who directed 20 Hindi films from film Dukhiyari-1937 to film Shri Krishna Bhakti-1973. The music was by Bulo C. Rani for songs written by Pt. Indra. The cast of the film was Khurshid Jr., Meena Kumari, Anjum, Nihal, Qamar, Shaikh Hasan, Nafeej Khalili etc. Except the 2 sisters i.e. Khurshid Jr. and Meena Kumari, I am not aware of any other cast members mentioned here. None of them are found in any other films. There were 11 songs and some of the singers like Savitri Gidwani, Chunilal Pardeshi are not known to me. Others like Mohd. Faruqi and A.R.Oza are atleast known to me.

Despite being known to be a writer on old films for the last 14 years, such unknown names give me an Inferiority Complex and a feeling that no one can know everything in any field, which makes the person humble too !
