For many years now, and please correct me if I am making this statement in error – for many years now, I do not recall having seen or heard about a film on mythological theme coming from the mainstream film industry. Maybe it is a sign of time, to be aware of. The industry seems to be getting more and more aligned with a global market and a global audience, that this genre of movie making appears to be dying out. And to think that the film industry started off in the first place with stories and themes based on mythology. Even in the 70s and somewhat in the 80s, some production banners dared to attempt making such films, but in the 90s and after, this genre has pretty much disappeared from the screen.

“Heer” (1956) was a Filmistan Production. It was directed by Hamid Dutt (?) and the starcast included names viz Pradeep Kumar, Nutan, Ulhas, Darpan, S. L. Puri, Randhir, Krishna Kumari, Zohra Sehgal, Chaman Puri, Mubarak, Murad, Rashid Khan, Lalita Pawar, Shakuntala etc.

The movie “Baaz” (1953), not to be confused with “Baazi”(1951) was an H G Films production. It was directed by Guru Dutt and the starcast of the movie oincluded names like Guru Dutt,Geeta Bali, Ramsingh, Kuldip Kaur, Sulochana, Yashodhara Katju, Jaswant, K. N. Singh, etc.

“Nau Do Gyaarah” (1957) was a Navketan production movie. It was directed by Vijay Anand. The star cast had names like Dev Anand, Kalpana Kartik, Lalita Pawar, Rashid Khan, Jeevan, Shashikala, Madan Puri, M. A. Latif, Helen, Krishan Dhawan, Jagdish Raaj, Nazir Kashmiri, Bhagan Sinha, Tuntun, Prem Prakash etc.

“Chunariya” (1948) is by now an obscure movie. What I know about this movie is that this movie had Wasti, Manorama, Pran etc in it.

I have discussed two songs from this movie in the past. Here is another song from the movie. This is a light hearted song where the lady is calling her beloved who for some reasons has become annoyed with her. And her beloved is no ordinary person. He has got a Motor ! And the Motor (Car was called Motor in Hindi movies those days) could well be a beloved possession of the man, so the lady gives “duaa” in the song that may his motor remain intact.
