Here is a song from “Baazi” (1951). It is sung by Geeta Roy ( later Dutt). Sahir Ludhianvi is the lyricist and S D Burman is the music director.

Madan Mohan is known for his outstanding songs that were sung by Lata. But it is not as if he has created such songs only with Lata. He has had some memorable songs with other female singers as well. In fact, if one looks at all his songs in 1950s , then one of the most memorable song sung for him by a female singer in that decade could well turn out to be a song sung by Geeta Dutt.

Here is a “western” style song and dance from “Baazi” (1951). It is sung by Geeta Roy (later)Dutt and it is picturised on Geeta Bali and her troupe.

Tu mera chaand main teri chaandni

When I listened to “Purani filmon ke geet” programme on Radio Ceylon in my younger days, this song “tu mera chand main teri chandni” used to get played so very often in that programme. If they had a popularity contest among all those old songs then this song would have won hands down in popularity, it seems to me.

Aaja chhaaye kaare badra

In 1950s, it was difficult to imagine a music director making his mark without using the voice of Lata. But there were two music directors who achieved this seemingly impossible feat. One was O P Nayyar who never used Lata’s voice in even once in his career. Another music director who stopped using Lata’s voice in 1950s was S D Burman.

Kamaata hoon bahut kuchh

Bollywood movie makers often tend to have same titles as that of old movies. For instance, I am aware of three movies titled “Adhikar”. The most well known of them for me is the movie of 1971 which was a musical blockbuster ( though the movie itself did not do well). There was another movie by this name in 1986.
