Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 32
—————————————–

DEEWAANI (1947) was produced by Sohrab Modi under the banner of Minerva Movietone and it was directed by Y D Sarpotdar. The star cast included Wasti, Mumtaz Shanti, Husn Bano, Ghulam Hussain, Abu Bakar, Chanda Bai, Jilani, Sadat Ali, Satya Rani etc. There were 8 songs in the film written by Shams Azimabadi (6) and Sewan Rizvi (2) which were set to music by Gyan Dutt. From the star cast and a couple of songs that I heard, the film seems to belong to social genre, probably a family drama. One song from the film has been covered in the Blog.

Mohammed Rafi – ‘अ’  से  ‘ह’ तक  (From ‘अ’ to ‘ह’) – 17
– – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – – –

‘झ’
“झुका झुका के नज़र यूं उठाई जाती है”

jab bhi ye dil udaas hota hai
jaane kaun aas paas hota hai

These lines tickle the strands of the mind often, when in the moods of a tranquil nothingness – sometimes in the moments just as the self is drifting into sleep, or sometimes, on a journey in a relaxed coziness with nothing particular to do, or sometimes on lonely walks in the evenings. And the mind wonders, trying to put a face to a distant thought – “jaane kaun aas paas . . . hai”. That face is almost never distinct. Whose presence it is that I feel – the mind is yet to discern, and ascribe substance to the tenuous wisps that almost form the image, but then always fails to bring into a distinct focus. And the mind wanders, continues to seek – an unfinished image, trying to capture an elusive face, and a name that keeps bumping tantalizingly close to the edges of memory, yet always remains just a breath away from my grasp.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 13

Naqsh-e-khayaal dil se mitaaya nahin hanooz
Bedard maine tujh ko bhulaaya nahin hanooz

——Josh Malihabadi

Dil se tera khayaal na jaaye to kya karoon
Main kya karoon koi na bataaye to kya karoon

—–Hafeez Jalandhari

Both these ghazals have been written in the same metre expressing almost the same sentiments. I have no idea as to which one of them was written first. But these ghazals have become a source of inspiration for writing lyrics for songs in Hindi films for situations like ‘broken heart’, separation from the beloved etc.

There has been some confusion as to when Begum Akhtar (1914-1974) first sang in a concert. Also, associated with this confusion is when she first recorded the ghazals and thumris for the issue of her 78 rpm discs. Rita Ganguly, one of the senior disciples of Begum Akhtar, in her book ‘ Ae Mohobbat – A Reminiscing Begum Akhtar’ (2008) has mentioned that Begum Akhtar’s first participation in a concert as a singer was at the age of 11 (1925) at Calcutta (now Kolkata) which was arranged for Bihar Flood Relief Fund. However, many of the articles and blogs mention that her first concert was in 1934 for Bihar Earthquake Relief Fund. Some articles even mention that she sang in a concert for the first time at the age of 15.
