Hullo Atuldom
Back after a year of inactivity. My last post was on 27th December 2025. Since then the calendar has changed and we are into 2026- a New Year. Even if the gap has been of only a few days, it feels like I have been away forever- feels like an Year of Inactivity. 🙂

A R Rahman – The Musician of 21st Century – 11
Finally, I come to this wedding song, semi-qawwali from the 1995 film Bombay. It is an essential song in the ARR series, as a personal favourite for all these years. The essence of this composition is undoubtedly K. S. Chitra’s rendition of this Hindi version. I can’t say much about the Tamil version, as the words are not comprehendible to me. Each language has its own sounds, and nuances of them. An ignorant person cannot fathom them. May be the regulars knowing Tamil will be able to describe, what I am unable to say here.

Not really.
The above qawwali couplet from Barsaat ki Raat (1960) is quite viral these days. This post is however on the genius music director who composed the well-known qawwali.

‘Daasi’ (1944) was produced under the banner of Pradhan Pictures and was directed by Hiren Bose. The cast included Najam-ul-Hasan and Ragini in the lead roles supported by Kalavati, Khairati, G N Butt, Charlie, Om Prakash, Gyani, Fazal Shah, Manzoor etc. The story of the film was written by Dalsukh Pancholi. I have strong reason to believe that Pradhan Pictures was Dalsukh Pancholi’s ‘ghost’ banner as I find his name on the Censor Certificate as applicant.
The film’s lead actor, Najam-ul-Hasan (in the credit title of the film, his name is spelled as Najam Hussain) became well known for an incidence while working in the Bombay Talkies film, ‘Jeevan Naiyya’ (1936) as a lead actor opposite Devika Rani, wife of Himanshu Rai, the founder of the Bombay Talkies. During the making of the film, Najam-ul-Hasan eloped with Devika Rani to Calcutta (Kolkata). While Devika Rani was convinced by Sashadhar Mukerjee to return to Bombay Talkies, Ashok Kumar who was working in the Bombay Talkies as a laboratory assistant got a chance to work as a lead actor opposite Devika Rani, replacing Najam-ul-Hasan.

‘Bandhan Baahon Kaa’ (1988) was produced by O P Bajaj and Mahendra Mansinghka and was directed by Govind Munis. The cast included Raj Kiran, Swapna, Brahmachari, Hullad Muradabadi, Rajesh Puri, Avnish Pratap, Manoj Tiwari, Rita Katyal etc. The film was based on a short story, ‘Kariye Chhima’ by Hindi novelist, Shivani (real name: Gaura Pant). In Kumaon language, ‘Chhima’ is a derived word from ‘Kshama’ (forgiveness). It appears that the film had a delayed release as the song album was released in 1985 with the film’s original title, ‘Kariye Kshama’.

Today’s song is from a Muslim Social film Paak Daman-1957.
1957 – what a year it was ! The best year in the Golden Era! The best year in the 50s! The best year for melody and music! Such wonderful films came this year!!! The lineup of 1957 films looks like the selection of the creamy layer in everlasting music – ‘Mother India’, ‘Pyasa’, ‘Tumsa Nahin Dekha’, ‘Bhabhi’, ‘Asha’, ‘Miss Mary’, ‘Naya Daur’, ‘Do Aankhen Barah Haath’, ‘Paying Guest’, ‘Nau Do Gyarah’, ‘Dekh Kabira Roya’. ‘Nausherwaan e Adil ‘, ‘Gateway Of India’, ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke ‘, ‘Kathputali’, ‘Sharada’ . . . Films like Baarish, Ab Dilli door nahin, Abhiman, Bada Bhai, Begunah, Beti, Chhote Babu, Coffee House, Dushman, Johnny Walker, Miss Bombay, Miss India, Mr. X, Narsi Bhagat, Paak Daman, Pawanputra Hanuman, Ustad, Zamana.
Films produced in Madras were quite popular. AVM’s ‘Bhabhi’, ‘Miss Mary’ and ‘Hum Panchhi Ek Daal Ke’, Prasad Production’s first Hindi film ‘Sharda’, and MV Raman’s film ‘Asha’ played havoc with their captive audiences. Films from south somehow have always concocted a success formula, mixing comedy, tragedy, social message, excellent production values and above all superb music, which made their films very popular everywhere.
