Today’s song is from film Gauri-1943. It was a film made by Ranjit Movietone. The Lyrics, Story and Screenplay as well as the Direction was by Kidar Sharma. The cast of the film was Prithviraj Kapoor, Shamim, Monica Desai, Rajkumari Shukla, Brijmala, Amarnath etc etc.

Today’s song is a rare song( difficult to get) from film Bhanwara-44, starring K L Saigal.

I have been writing on old films and its music since more than 6 years now, but I have never written on any song of a film featuring Saigal and his songs. I had never planned it that way. Actually, I am also a fan of Saigal. Probably it so happened that I found that there were “better’ people to write on Saigal and I coolly left it at that. Our Sudhir ji has done great justice to Saigal songs- film and Non film- with his detailed and emotional articles. These were lapped up by our readers and praise was heaped on every article of his on this topic. Comments on those songs are a testimony to this.

I wish all our readers a very Happy and cosmic MAHASHIVRATRI, to be celebrated today, i.e. 4th March 2019.

This is the one day in the entire year (barring Shravan Somvars) on which I become more religious and engage in pooja, listening to Shiv Bhajans and also do fasting. Our family was very religious. My father was a Sanskrit Scholar and had spent some time in Banares, giving religious sermons in the Kashi Vishveshar Temple during 1948-49. This was the time when he had gone underground to avoid arrest, as most Hindu Mahasabha leaders were arrested along with Savarkar, after Gandhi ji’s death. He was finally arrested and freed by the court “ba-izzat“. We came down to Hyderabad and he started practicing as a Lawyer as he was BA LLB.

Today’s song is from film ‘Doctor Z’ from 1959.

The title seems funny, isn’t it? Somehow, I find that the film makers give bizarre titles to their films sometimes. Films with prefix Mr. or Dr. were plenty. The earliest such a Talkie film was ‘Mr. 420’ made in 1937. Later, ‘Mr. X’ was made in 1938. This was repeated in 1957 and 1984. ‘Mr. X in Bombay’ was made in 1964. ‘Mr. India’ came in 1961 and also 1987. There was a ‘Mr. Bechara’ in 1996, ‘Mr. Chakram’ in 1956, ‘Mr, Jhatpat’ in 1943, ‘Mr John’ in 1959, ‘Mr. Lamboo’ in 1956. ‘Mr. Romeo’ in 1973 and 1999. ‘Mr. Q’ in 1958, ‘Mr.Bond’ in 1992, ‘Mr. Azad’in 1994, ‘Mr .Dynamite’ in 1947, ‘Mr. Murder’ in 1969, ‘Mr. Qartoon, M.A.’ in 1958, ‘Mr. Sampat’ in 1952, ‘Mr. Toofan’ in 1963, ‘Mr. 100%’ in 2005, ‘Mr. Badmash’ in 2009, ‘Mr. Bhatti on Chhutti’ in 2012, ‘Mr. Hot and Mr. Cool’ in 2007, ‘Mr. Lonely Miss Lovely’ in 2004, ‘Mr. Prime Minister’ in 2005, ‘Mr. Singh Mrs. Mehta’ in 2009, ‘Mr. White Mr. Black’ in 2007, ‘Mr. ya Mrs.’ in 2005, The most hilarious title in this category was ‘Mr. Khujli’ in 2007 !!!

Today’s song is from the film Toote Khilaune-54. It is produced by N.Mehta, directed by Nanabhai Bhatt and the music Director is my favourite – Chitragupt. The cast of the film was Shekhar, Purnima, Gulab, Ranjeet Kumari, Master Romi, Babu Raje, a dog called Ginger and Guest artiste Asha Mathur.

This was a typical family film, involving a too much interfering Mother in law, a foster son and a loving step mother. The decade of the 50s was a period when the film makers were trying their best to give something to everyone. Films of almost all Genres were made in this decade. This decade was a Bridge Period between the old style music and the film making and the New Age films and the Music.

Today’s song is an extremely rare song, to be presented here today. It is from film Shaadi ka Maamla-1937. It was produced by the ‘One Film’ banner of Lalitkaladarsh Movietone, Bombay and it was directed by Bhargavram Vithal aka Mama Varerkar- a heavyweight name in Marathi Literature. The song was written in Hindi by Pt. Dwijendra Sharma. We are unaware of who was the Music Director, but Cinestaan claims that Pt. Badriprasad Manik was the MD, though HFGK is silent on this issue. This rare song is sung by Bapurao Pendharkar, who was an actor, singer and producer on Marathi stage, in the early 1900’s.
