BHAJAN MALA – GOLDEN 50s (Pushp – 9)
——————————————-

Today’s bhajan is from a film called Patit Pawan-1955.

The word Patit Paawan is generally used for Shri Ram. This is based on a story that, Ahilya, who was the wife of Rishi Gautam, was very beautiful and was cheated by Indra Dev. Smitten by her beauty, he comes disguised as Rishi Gautam, her husband and has a good time with her. When the real Rishi Gautam comes to know about it, he is so furious that he curses Ahilya and turns her into a stone and she would have to remain in that state till Sri Ram’s feet touched her when she would regain her human form. After a few years, Lord Shri Ram comes that way and touches the stone and thereby frees Ahilya from the curse and she regains her human form. Thus, a Patit (the fallen one) is made Paawan (is purified), hence the name Patit Paawan for Shri Ram.

BHAJAN MALA – GOLDEN 50s (Pushp-8)

Indians simply love Festivals. If you see carefully, almost throughout the year, some or the other Festival or an important day is being celebrated somewhere in India. For example, take a look here…

BHAJAN MALA – GOLDEN 50s (Pushp-7)

One advantage of seeing religious films was that it increased your knowledge of mythology and the Puranas. Though there was a common principle highlighted( Satyamev Jayate or the victory of Good over Bad ), every story’s treatment and content used to be different. With our Holy books overflowing with stories involving all types of Gods, Godesses and Bhakts, film producers must have never fallen short of stories. Famous and well known studios like Bombay Talkies, Sagar, Mohan, Prakash, Prabhat, Wadia or Filmistan stuck to popular and traditional stories like Satyavan Savitri, Bhakta Dhruv, Shri Ram or Shrikrishna. other production companies tried comparatively less known, unknown or even Hybrid stories (Mythological base but treated in filmy style) to make films.

BHAJAN MALA – GOLDEN 50S (Pushp- 6)
————————————-

I remember that we had just shifted to our new flat in 1984. It was a spacious building, with plenty of open space all around and at the rear side there was some big open space enough for a Badminton Court and a small garden along the compound wall. This open space was sometimes used by the residents for small functions and private parties. One day, one of our neighbours, Mr. Markan, invited my family for a programme of ” Mata’s Jagaran “, which he was holding before his son’s marriage. Jaagaran is a programme, running through almost the whole night, singing Mata’s ( Devi’s) bhajans, doing Pooja etc. This was our first such experience and we accepted the invitation with excitement.

BHAJAN MALA- GOLDEN 50s (Pushp-5)

Do you remember which story you liked the most in your childhood ? When we were in school, we read lot of stories. Stories from Mythology, History, Magic, Mystery, Birbal, Tenaliram, Tarzan etc etc. We liked some stories, and did not like others. To me, barring Alladin, Alibaba and Sindbad, all stories of Arabian Nights were same. Stories from Vedas were hard to remember due to difficult names like Jamadagni, Jaratkaru or Yadnyawalkya etc. My favourite story was that of Alladin, which I would read repeatedly at frequent intervals.

BHAJAN MALA-GOLDEN 50s (Pushp-4)
————————————

In India there are at least two places where true secularism is strictly followed. One of them is our Armed Forces. There is no discrimination in the Armed Forces on Religion/race/caste/colour or State. In almost every Army establishment you will find a Mosque,a Mandir and a Church along with a common hall for meditation for all other faiths. People from all states join the Forces. One may say,why then are there Jaat Regiments, Maratha Regiments, Mahar Regiments, Punjab Regiments ? It must be understood that these are the names given by the Britishers to recognise the special qualities of that region. It has nothing to do with Caste or Language. The Commandant of a Maratha Regiment can be a Punjabi officer also.

BHAJAN MALA – GOLDEN 50s (Pushp-3)
—————————————

There is a class of people, who make faces when a Mythological film is mentioned. According to them, seeing such films is ” outdated ” and ” Fundamentalist ‘. They feel that those who see such films are way behind the times. These people forget that in the so called ” advanced” world of Hollywood, even today,Mythological, costume and Historical films are regularly produced. Only thing is that these films are no longer advertised on the same scale as was the case a few decades back.

BHAJAN MALA-GOLDEN 50s (Pushp-2)
——————————–

Culture and Religion have a close relationship. The commonest points of Religion, followed by a majority for time immemorial, becomes culture of the nation. Raas Garba, Ganesh Utsav, Diwali celebrations and Indian Calendar New Year days in respective regions are no more a matter of Religion by now. They have become the cultural heritage of the country. A good example is Holi or lighting done on Deepavali or touching the feet of the elders…all these constitute Culture, though its roots are traceable to religion.

BHAJAN MALA – GOLDEN 50s (Pushp- 1)
——————————————

I grew up in a joint family of about 20 people including children. My childhood memories are vivid and I remember playing with cousins and enjoying Festivals with the elders. By coincidence ,by 1947-48 our joint family was fragmented, not because of the Partition, but because One Uncle joined Army, the other joined Navy and the third one joined Police. My own father had to go underground to evade arrest, after Gandhi ji’s assassination..He was an RSS worker. We shifted coolly to Banaras and stayed there for an year. Ultimately father was traced and arrested and we were escorted by the police to mother’s town in Maharashtra.

THE VIBRANT 40s (Episode No. 15)LAST SONG OF THIS SERIES
——————————————————-
All human being like to be always happy. No one wants to be sad, no one wants pain, penury misery and anonymity. There are scores of cases from the film Industry which bring tears after reading about their last days and their sad ends. Not that every artist died in this way. There were hundreds of film personalities who spent their last days in comfort and with their dear ones. No one will remember that, but stories of Riches to Rags and death of an artist in total anonymity saddens the heart.
