Today Mumbai (erstwhile BOMBAY) boasts of being the only place where Hindi films are made, but in the initial stages of Film-making, it was not so. Initially, when the Talkie films started, most of the actors and actresses of the silent era, who could speak Hindi/Urdu and sing a little got entry into these films. Soon many Anglo-Indian girls and actors like master Vithal, who could not speak Hindi properly, leave aside singing, had to be excluded from Talkie films.(Master Vithal who was selected as the Hero for India’s First Talkie film,”Aalam Ara”-1931, based on his looks,Physique and his silent film credentials-over the capable Mehboob Khan- gave such pathetic performance in his Hindi/Urdu dialogues that he had to be shown as Unconcious almost throughout the film to hide his poor diction of Hindi/Urdu dialogues.)

THE VIBRANT 40s.(Episode No. 8)
———————————–
This post is coming after a break of almost 10 days or so. It was not a ‘Commercial Break’, but was a ‘Duty break’ ! We like to engage ourselves in the olden times, but the newer generation wants to enjoy Today’s life Today…or even earlier, if possible. Everyone seems to be in a hurry these days. I had to bow down to family pressures and go on a trip, down to KERALA. Of course it did a lot of good to me. Away from the Computer, FB and the Whatsapp, the days were spent in the company of family members, in ” The God’s Own Country”-Kerala. It did refresh me to the extent that after a gap of almost 60 years, I tried swimming again. To my own surprise, I could swim comfortably and the family heaved a sigh of relief ! All of them were unitedly against my determination of swimming with grandchildren ” at THIS age ” !!!. (My swimming Video is posted on my FB page).

CREDIBILITY is certainly a valuable virtue and a treasure to possess. Our parents enjoy a high credibility quotient with us. Anything told by them was accepted without a doubt or a question.(This is, of course, in olden days). We respect people with credibility. Books like Dictionaries and Encyclopedias carry the highest credibility. Does anyone question the meaning of words in a Dictionary ? Certainly not ! Likewise Encyclopaedias too give credible information.

THE VIBRANT 40s (Episode No. 5)
————————————–
” Haazir so Vazir ” and ” Out of sight is out of mind ” are two well known proverbs which describe the Hindi film industry. Those who are in the limelight- for whatever reasons- are the talk of the town. Those who are not heard about, seen or spoken about are not remembered, whatever their contribution to the industry.
