Old age too has some advantages. You have seen or done something long long ago, which is a part of History or a matter of wonder and awe for the younger generation. The cicumstances and social set up has undergone a sea change in the last 50-60 years. As such this period is equal to 2-3 generations(30 years=1 generation) and no wonder if things are topsy-turvy and 180 degrees changes have taken place.

Guru Dutt and Dev Anand were good friends. Guru Dutt was senior to Dev Anand,having started in 1941 with Uday Shankar’s Cultural centre-Almoda to study Dance and drama. In 1944 Guru Dutt joined Prabhat Film company at Poona, where he met his two future friends- Rehman and Dev Anand. In 1946, he worked there as an assistant Director to P.L.Santoshi for “Hum Ek Hai” and also choreographed its dances. It was here that he developed a bond with Dev.

In the early era of Talkie films the Film Companies which were well known were Imperial, New Theatres, British Dominion, Kohinoor, Krishna, Maharashtra, Ranjit, Saraswati, Sharada film company etc. Most of these companies continued from the silent era. Laughter is a symbol of happy mood or joy. It is an important segment of ‘NAVRASAS’ as HASYA. Even the original writer Bharatmuni has described Hasya as an important element of Navaras, in his Natyashastra. The era of silent films in India started in 1913, when 2 films were made-Raja Harishchandra and Mohini Bhasmasur. One would think that this must have started a spate of Silent films, but surprisingly, in 1914, 1915 and 1916 only 1 Silent Film each was produced. From 1916 it started with 5 films till 1931, when the age of Talkies arrived with Alam Ara.

I was very fond of seeing movies and listening to the songs since childhood. Those days, children were not allowed to see films, unlike today (only the other day I saw my neighbour taking his family of wife and 2 sons aged 10 and 14 to see the film “The Dirty picture”. I became sqeamish, but these are current trends). If at all a film was to be seen, the children had to go with their mother, aunt, grandmother or some such female relative and the film would invariably be “Ram Ravan Yudh” or “Bakasur ki Maut”.
