Today is the birthday of one of our living legends – Manna Dey ji.
It is his 94th birthday – and although 94 is a ripe age, we wish him many more birthdays to come.

This song happens to be the 7600th song on this blog – and I am happy and privileged to have been given the opportunity to present a song on the occasion. When Atul made me the offer earlier today, I gladly accepted. Congratulations, Atul, on this century milestone!

It is perhaps the inability of our times to distinguish between the “good” and the “great”, the “noteworthy” and the “legendary”, the “impressive” and the “brilliant”, that leads us to use the latter of the two adjectives in each case in far greater measure, and for far more modest achievements than would have been approved of by an earlier generation. Or maybe it is just our laziness, or our tendency to exaggerate, that leads us to our use (or abuse) of the English language in this manner.

It’s been a while since my last post here. And I feel pretty bad about it. Somehow, in the last month (or more), I’ve just not been able to generate the required mental juice to be able to come up with anything worth putting on paper (or on electronic media). Had Shakespeare been around and had one look at me, he’d have promptly coined something like “Listlessness, thou hast what human spirit conquer’d, For Man knoweth not whence he cometh, and where he goeth”.

Perhaps there is something about me which makes me always root for the underdog in any situation. In the very first men’s singles Wimbledon tennis final I followed, I rooted for the 40-year old Ken Rosewall as he was brutally brushed aside by the 22-year old all-conquering Jimmy Connors.

Today, the 18th of August, is the 76th birthday of Gulzar saab.
And, as I type 76th, I can’t help feeling that 1936 must have been a very special year. If I were selling wine and comparing Hindi film personalities with wine, I think I’d say 1936 could be right up there for best year for vintage wine of the 20th century. 🙂

Of the several signs that I am losing it now, one of the surest signs has got to be when I forget the anniversaries of people or events close to my heart.
I normally pride myself on remembering dates – in fact I surprise my friends sometimes when I mention dates of events or anniversaries that they don’t expect me to remember. These are dates that have just stuck in my mind when I first came across them, e.g. 18th May 1974 being the famous date of the Pokhran nuclear explosion . Or, 24th October 1945 being the date the United Nations (U.N) came into existence. (18th May also happens to be the birthday of one of the favourite cricketers from my childhood days – B.S. Chandrasekhar. And 24th October also happens to be the birthday of our dear memsaab (of memsaabstory.com). So see, it isn’t all that difficult to remember dates! 🙂

The 19th of July may not seem like a particularly noteworthy date in the history of mankind. But for this blog, it is a special day – because it happens to be the birthday of this blog. Yes, friends, it was on the 19th of July 2008 that Atul started this blog that we have all come to love so much over the years.
