One of the key threads of genres that runs through the films of 1960s is an array of action films that were centered around the he-man actor Dara Singh. This was the period when Dara Singh constituted an entire segment of the film industry all by himself. Stories and screenplays were written keeping him as the center of the universe. His larger than life physical presence, his standing as a real life body builder and wrestler of international repute, and his reputation as an upright person with very clean habits and a very honest, very humane person – all these characteristics made him a very popular figure with the masses. Here was a screen hero who would be easily idolized by the common man, for the simple reason that his screen roles were a very close reflection of his real life persona.

Bombay Gangout – Part 2
After the Breakfast.
After having amicably negotiated the breakfast time, the gang members descended again to the secret basement chambers, to start the day’s proceedings in earnest. I will have to now write a little bit more about Bombay syndicate members, as we were getting more and more familiar with every passing minute. The most energetic and the most engaging personality of the hour was definitely the IndiaMan. He has a joke ready for every occasion, for every topic. Let me tell you why I used the epithet – ‘the antithetic patella specialist’ for him.

From the very early childhood, probably the deepest interest that I have is gathering and storing away in memory – facts, curious info, peculiar data, and a plethora of such interesting information that I would use (still use 🙂 ) to make interesting conversations and, ahem, impressing others :). In short, I have been a General Knowledge (GK) buff since I was toddler. In my class, I was known as the best and the worst – always scored the highest, mostly perfect scores, in the GK papers, and always, without fail, scored the lowest in art and painting. (The art teachers were generous; they would give me just enough not to spoil my averages.)

The more one searches and sifts through the immense ocean that is the Hindi film song, the more are the gems that come back into memory. And the magic of Chitragupt is seemingly unending. A career spanning a little over four decades, and the number of films he created music for numbering close to two hundred, it is little wonder that hidden gems from this unsung composer will continue to appear and amaze us.
Remembering Chitragupt on the anniversary of his passing away (14th January).

Chilly winter greetings to all from a cold, cold Delhi. As I sit and write this post, the minimum temperature that continues to be maintained is in the range of 2 – 4 degrees C. Add to that the fog that keeps the warm sun away from the view. And top it up with rain that has been visiting us off and on. When I woke up today morning, it was drizzling. And the leaves of the trees waving in a brisk breeze told the story that it is going to be another chilly day. And so it has been for the past couple of weeks. Although I enjoy such weather, but there have been other circumstances, associated with the weather, that have kept me occupied and away from the blog activities. But today, we must celebrate.

On Sunday (21 Dec), when the gangout happened in Bombay, many things converged together, including a lot of birds of the same feather. And with it also came the ideas around another new series (this one). But more about the series later.

A promise that was made in 1970, I am sure, continues to be pursued. In Aligarh. As the poet turns a graceful ninety today. Yes, it is the ninetieth birthday of Gopaldas Saxena, a litterateur par excellence. A poet that we are more familiar with by his pen name – Neeraj.

It is just past midnight. It continues to be chillingly cold here in Delhi. The standoff is ongoing in the struggle with the beckoning blankets, as the mind is trying its best to continue staying at the keyboard and thwart all the enticements of a cozy quilt. So far so good.

Time to take a breather. Ah, well, not on Atul-Song-a-Day blog. For the celebrations are afoot, and the special songs have to be processed and posted, in time for deadlines.
Talking about deadlines, in the past week to ten days, we have been missing quite a few of them. I was in email communication with Atul ji earlier today. You see, he had informed us well in advance that his family will be with him during the closing weeks of the year, and he would have very little time to devote to the blog activities. Ah yes, when the boss is around, . . . . 🙂

23rd December was the anniversary of passing away of two artists that have a significant contribution to the Indian cinema – singer Noorjehaan and music director K Datta.
Noorjehaan, born as Allah Wasai in 1926, was one of the eleven siblings born into a family of musicians and singers. Her parents, Madad Ali and Fateh Bibi encouraged her and at the age of six years, she learnt music at the feet of Bade Ghulam Ali Khan. When she was nine, her talent caught the attention of Ghulam Ahmed Chishti, who brought her to stage programs in Lahore, in which she appeared as Baby Noorjehaan. She gained attention in Lahore, and was invited to sing and to play child roles in Punjabi films being produced in Lahore. She appeared in films like ‘Misr Ka Sitaara’ (1935), and played the role of child Heer, in the Punjabi film ‘Heer Sayaal’.
