No songs of this film are available anywhere like You Tube etc. Then, how did I get introduced to this song ? There is a story behind this.

Recently, I had the occasion to read an essay titled The Magical World of Bombay Talkies, written by Professor Lalit Joshi. The paper has been written in the context of making of the cultural space for the nation in waiting and the role of the Bombay Talkies Ltd. (BT) in the evolution of Bombay film industry. The essay sets out the growth of BT since its inception in 1934 until it closed down in 1954.

The star cast included Munawwar Sultana, Ulhas, Mumtaz (Madhubala), Sheri, A Shah, W M Khan, Jilloo Bai etc. The story of the film revolves around the mistaken identities of the two prospective brides and bridegrooms. Sometimes, things can’t get more rare than this. As we look for rare combination of artists, and especially singers, we come across combinations where two artists have worked together in a song, once or maybe twice in the entire history of Indian cinema. This song today, is one such song. It is a duet, rather I should correct myself, it is a trio of singers. There are two female voices, and one male voice. The male voice is not identified, even in the Geet Kosh listings. The female voices are Shamshad Begum and Hamida Bano. And the year is 1948.

Forgotten Melodies of the 1940s – 49
——————————————-
SHOHRAT (1949) is one of those films of the 1940s about which not much information is available. I am surprised that I have not been able to find any poster or advertisement materials about the film even though one of the well-known film personality of that time, K Amarnath was associated with the film as the director who was also the director of the the box office successful films like Gaon Ki Gori (1945), ‘Mirza Sahiban’ (1947), ‘Baazaar’ (1949) etc.
